I was thinking about the SEC baseball tourney where only the top-12 get in.

Sorry, the posters here like to deal in reality. It's not about talking bad about the school, it's about being honest. If you want nothing but rainbows and unicorns, this site might not be for you.

coming into the season Frank was confident this was his best shooting team he's had.

I think it's clear he was saying that to build some early season confidence for an otherwise talent-starved team.

This team is bad. At a lot.

They looked very bad against Bama ... I mean they stunk it up.

Still time to get in a roll ... they've just gotta start hitting some shots. This has become a mental thing with this team IMHO.

Gamecocks tip in Athens at 1pm on SECN. USC swept the bulldogs last year to snap an ugly/uncharacteristic 8 game skid vs the bulldogs in a series once tied at 50 apiece. UGa holds a 58-52 advantage.

earlier this week, Frank called this matchup a "rock fight" since Fox has been in Athens. this game usually sees a very high number of fouls called. USC may be able to hang around if it can get to, and make, free throws.

We hung around alright

Ugly win, but road wins are huge.

was getting a bit concerned when both teams went into the bonus by 10:45 2H and after Silva split a pair of FT's Carolina didn't shoot another FT until 2:45 (Silva again) to go. UGa...shot 10 in the meantime.

Gamecocks have always played hard. today that finally played quicker than the other team. Hinson and his willingness to drive to the hoop has made defenses have to play honest. Booker and Gravett clearly wanted to prove something to their home-state school UGa today, too.

Thought for sure we would lose when we were up 49-43 and UGA came back to tie it

This team has potential ... hopefully they'll go on a little run but the tough part of the schedule is coming-up and we're liable to be exposed.

Glad to have Gravett back though ... and totally agree about Hinson, the guy is fearless. Can shoot the 3 too.

Yes, an SEC road win - especially against an SEC opponent we play twice in the season - can never be dismissed, no matter what type of season you're having. And as the OP stated, beating UGA is especially pleasing considering how they've dominated the series in recent years, and also they pretty much kept us out of the NCAAT two seasons ago by beating us 3 times.

The team continues to show improvement defensively, playing better/smarter for entire games or major portions of games. Hopefully that continues as USC is about to embark through a gauntlet of SEC opponents all having resurgent seasons: UK, UT, @ UF, an OOC top 10 Texas Tech, Miss. State. Four of those 5 games are at home, so IMO this stretch could determine what kind of a season we'll have overall...

Hinson has added a much-needed offensive option to the team, from left field. He's not scoring a ton, but has only played in 4 SEC gms and 7 overall, and in conference play he has three other Gamecocks averaging more minutes per game than he is, but averaging fewer pts per game. One of them a starter. His shooting % is well above the team average, and he's also a decent FT shooter as well. In the 3 OOC gms he got PT in, he played a total of 9 minutes (3.0 min. per gm), because he was so out of shape and conditioning as a BB player. Since the conf. schedule began, he's averaged 15.5 minutes per game (4 gms, 3 starts), and should continue to get his hardwood legs as he goes and contribute even more....

Also adding both Bowen and Rak Felder back to the team roster in terms of being able to practice with the team is huge too: CFM has mentioned that the team has struggled putting together full practices preparing for SEC opponents, because not only were they minus Bowen and Felder, but they were also without Gravett, Holden, and walk-on Corchiani due to injuries (the latter two are still out), which limited what they could run with a complete scout team of sorts, to help the major players prepare properly. Hopefully those additions - as well as Hinson improving on his BB contributions - will help the team get stronger defensively and become more disciplined as the season progresses....

Great write up!

Awesome win, I can’t say I expected that.

Very happy for our players. Great to hear practice is helping with Bowen and Felder.

I thought he made the biggest/most crucial bucket of the 2H for USC last night with the score 54-40. Evan's 3 pt make was a confident take and kept the lead from going to 16 as UK got a layup next possession.

Kotsar has clearly pressed/struggled in SEC games, but his contributions last night can't be underscored. 12 pts, 3/4 fg, 6 boards (Silva team high 8), no turnovers, 3 steals - and after missing 3 FTs he hit 4 in a row late to win the game. Maik set the tone early with a steal/layup on UK's first possession to open the game.

big opportunity tonight for USC at a ranked UF. if the Gamecocks can replicate the style of game it forced in Athens 12 days ago, good things could happen for Carolina.

3pt FGM and fast break points are advantages for UF tonight. gators turn the ball over the least amount of any SEC team this season, too - UF 188 to USC's 258 in 19 games for each team.

the ugly - USC is 5-19 all-time in SEC play at the O'Chlorine Center

the bad - Gamecocks last win in Gainesville was Jan 15, 2011 (4 game win streak for UF)

the good - Frank Martin is 3-1 vs Mike White as UF coach

side note - a ranked Gamecock basketball team has never lost to UF. that trend is not in jeopardy with tonight's game.

Florida has been hot and cold thus far this season, but they usually play well at home, and we don't play well in their arena (and we've also been hot and cold too), nor do we play well on the road period.

Add to that Florida probably marking this game on their calendar after the Elite Eight loss to us last season, and I'm not expecting great things, but hoping....

me either. I doubt any of us do. UF's biggest strength is our worst weakness - guard play.

ConwayGC's point about revenge for last year's Regional Final at MSG looms large as well.

USC will likely lose double digits tonight - but the real surprise will be when the Gamecocks knock off Texas Tech Saturday in another ugly "Frank Martin Special".

TTU has been shite on the road since their starting center broke a bone in his foot. 3 straight road losses scoring 65, 58 & 52 points. they have won their 2 home games, barely. TTU's offense is all in the paint and that's gone away with the injury. the are awful from 3-point range, too. this sets up right in Frank's wheelhouse with this year's Gamecock team.
