My only complaint this week

9 touches is not enough for how Smith is running the ball. Some of Boyd's touches need to be Smith's.

Agreed. We’ve done a better job getting Warren the ball again but we need to get Smith involved a bit more too. Both of those guys will help open Burks up even more.

I would like to see more screen passes.

It's obvious they're trying to get Boyd the bulk of the carries. They're trying to force a round peg into a round hole because he came back after turning down NFL money. Admirable of them, but it's to the detriment of the team. Time to reverse the roles and hopefully Boyd understands it's for the greater good.

Been thinking the same thing. I'm glad Boyd is back, but Smith is putting up better numbers, so he should be receiving more carries. He only had 5 against A&M.

I haven't seen Boyd do anything special all year. If the hole is there, sure he'll get some yards and is a tough runner. But he doesn't create much on his own. His runs look slow to get started and it looks like sometimes his feet aren't quick enough to hit cut backs

I posted this in another thread, but Boyd would be better in a power offense. Much like DMAC in that regard.
Our offensive line isn't good enough in the trenches to allow Boyd those running lanes. That's why they try to get him outside.
Smith has a lot more success because he is shifty. Hard to tackle with his small bulky frame.

I would like if Smith got a couple/few more touches, but I think a lot of his productive numbers come from being well rested and a change of pace back to Boyd's power running.
It catches the defense somewhat off guard when they're mentally prepping for a runner like Boyd and Smith gets in with his quick cuts and speed.
Smith has looked great in relief of Boyd while he was out, but his YPC weren't on the level they are when he comes in as a change of pace

One thing that Briles said when he was hired is that he would do whatever is necessary to put the ball in his playmaker's hands.
Well, Smith is far and away a more productive back. That's a bitch of mine also (why Boyd is getting so many snaps).
Boyd dances with the ball too much, goes down easily, and is a step too slow.
We need our best players on the field, period.

I wonder if the reason for this is that Rakeem's skillset is more well-rounded while Trelon is a better "change of pace" guy. The mental comparison I have here is Josh Jacobs to Damien Harris at Bama in 2018. That said, Trelon should definitely get more carries than he is now.

I think much of this is still recovering from injury and confidence. He's looked stronger and stronger each game.
It's the same thing as Zeke and Pollard.
You go with your workhorse and sometimes the change of pace guy looks better.
Can't forget the intangibles or blocking situational RPOs and his pass catching skillset vs Smith as reasons he may be getting more snaps and "runs".

With no context around this, my first though was we were talking about Franks here. Love that guy but damn if his running motion isn’t the ugliest thing ever.

Hard with Hooves.
Kidding aside, super exited to have a real mobile QB next year and see how this offense works.
Watched the replay yesterday sober and Drew was right, lots of missed, seemingly mistaken reads on Alpacas part on many dead end plays. If one guy stays home, or unless the defense totally committs to the RB handoff, he's generally SOL as he can't really beat anyone or make them miss.

quote:I think we'll have to disagree here. Personally I think Smith is gaining more because he hits the holes with more conviction. He doesn't hesitate when he gets to the line like Boyd does routinely unless there's a massive hole for him to breeze through. Even then he'll hesitate once he gets to the second level and it costs him yards damn near every time he touches the ball. Smith runs like an absolute dog and will go forward no matter what. I love Boyd and it's no indictment on him as a person but I think it's a confidence thing.

End of the day, this is probably it and coaches potentially working reps to try and help build it back up.
One of those things that may payoff and one of those things that might not but probably the "right" thing to do given he's a leader etc.
End of the day its certainly not costing us games unless you're someone who thinks A&M was really winnable.
