Steve Spurrier is definitely #1 when it comes to this category. He won the Heisman while a player at Florida and led them to six conference championships and a national title as a coach.

That post reminds me again how much I dislike Notre Dame

Steve Spurrier ... Heisman trophy, Walter Camp Trophy, 2 time All-American. All SEC.
Pat Dye...............2 time All- American, All SEC, SEC lineman of the year1960.
Johnny Majors....All-American, 2 time SEC MVP Heisman runner up.
These 3 had the best coaching careers and best accolades from college.

I actually had no idea Majors had such a successful playing career.

Johnny Majors should have won the Heisman that year. Instead they gave it to the QB of a 2-8 Notre Dame squad.

Majors absolutely deserved second place, but not to that dumbass Horning - Majors himself said that the guy who should have won the Heisman that year was Jim Brown, and he was right.
It also makes me respect Majors even more.

Pat Sullivan, who also won a Heisman, may have the claim to being the best HC-as-player in history as well. He, like Spurrier, also had a less than stellar NFL career.
Only thing is that he was a 'meh' HC. Not horrible, but nothing to brag about.

My Pops has told me on several occasions that John Majors should have won the Heisman over Paul Hornung. Majors led Tennessee to a 10-1 record and an SEC Championship, while Notre Dame was terrible at 2-8. UT had 2 backs with similar numbers that year, but Majors was the game changer.

Bobby Dodd played QB for Tennessee back from 1928-1930 or so, only had one loss as a college player. 29-1-1 overall record or something similar.

And the only coach to have won a Heisman and coached a Heisman winner.

Probably Spurrier all-time but among those I watched play it's Scott Frost. He was always somewhat overshadowed as Tommy Frazier's successor but he was damn near unstoppable
