re: Question about your relationship with UAB and UAH

Seemed like to me that uah used to be more of a local school for people specializing in engineering. Engineering grads from UAH do really well in the local economy. Really was a great way to get a good education and line up a good paying job. They had basically no major athletic programs outside of hockey. So it always lined up well with UA, so lots of fans from the in state kids.

Then about a decade ago they tried to change the name and started trying to evolve into what UAB had become. With Huntsville growing and attracting more out of state people, I think it is moving in that direction.

It is now the UAB school of medicine, and it operates 4 campuses; in Tuscaloosa (at UA in conjunction with the College of Community Health Sciences), Huntsville, Montgomery, and of course, the primary campus in Birmingham. Students at other campuses do the first two years in Birmingham.

The University of Alabama Health Systems (Kirklin Clinic, etc.) was a separate fourth separate entity under the direction of the BOT until, I believe, 2016 when it was moved under the UAB umbrella. There are now only three distinct financial entities in the UA system. The stated reasoning was that it was for continuity due to the intertwined nature of UAB and UAHS, but a look at the financial statements makes me think it had more to do with strengthening financial ratios involving debt and expenditures after several years of the construction boom.

UAH is growing fast But still not nearly at the UAB rate. The campus has still a very small commuter feel to it. During the average midday it can be a little crowded, but after 4 pm things start to go ghost town.

They are buying properties from the city of Huntsville and steady expanding their footprint and are working on building a new "town centre" to include, more shops, restaurants a grocery store and student living..on the west side of campus pushing more into the urban area of University Dr (right next to MidCity development, the largest mixed used development under construction in the country)giving it that city-campus vibe like UAB has.

When I went to UAH most of the people their didnt care about sports in general. Mostly engineering nerd types. The nurses were probably bigger sports fans.
