Recently released KGB documents reveal that a 1980s geological project may have led to the collapse of the Soviet Union and verifiable proof that Hell exists.

The leaks reveal that a team of Soviet engineers led by an individual named "Mr. Azzacov" in an unnamed place in Siberia had drilled a hole that was 14.4 kilometres (8.9 mi) deep before breaking through to a cavity. Intrigued by this unexpected discovery, they lowered an extremely heat-tolerant microphone, along with other sensory equipment, into the bore hole. The temperature deep within was 1,000 °C (2,000 °F)—heat from a chamber of fire from which (purportedly) the tormented screams of the damned could be heard.

The recordings of hell can be heard here

The tower in which the bore hole was originally housed

Shortly after the recordings were made the hole began to heat up, the ground began to shake, and the housing tower collapsed. Three divisions of the Red Army were then mobilized to secure and seal the opening to hell.

A security facility was then built around it which has since been abandoned.

The knowledge of the hellhole incident was kept from even the leaders of the USSR until 1985 when the recordings were played for Soviet Premier Konstantin Chernenko who suffered a massive heart attack from the terror of the revelation that Hell was real.

Leadership of the Soviet Union then passed to Gorbachev who was determined to successfully and peacefully dismantle the atheist empire but it was agreed that the recordings should not be made widely available to the public.

The more you know.

Me, too. They were hilarious. So were the headlines in tabloids at the grocery checkout lanes.

Yeah, I don't believe Hell is 8 miles under our feet.

I do believe the Soviets drilled a really deep hole, and probably hit a pocket of heated, compressed gas that destroyed the housing tower.

I'm sure natural geological processes create all sorts of fantastic sounds that could be mistaken for tortured souls.

Drilling deep into the Earth isn't advisable. I mean, sure, you can harness energy that way, but look at what happened to Krypton.

People never learn it seems.

Soviets were bored so they bored a hole in the ground.

I guess vodka is their bourbon.

Who has not gotten drunk and drilled a hole in the ground. I know some fraternity guys who got pretty lit and after two days had a sizable hole that somebody said they should build a pool. About a week later, and lots of booze, they had a pretty nice swimming pool.

True Story.

Never underestimate the power of serious drinking.

The National Enquirer ran a headline about this in the 80s.

Edit: No joke. I remember laughing about the headline with a buddy.

The Soviets went in for science in a big way, which is to say when they did a scientific test they had a tendency to over due things. The same with their engineering. Build it big, built it tough, and build it simple.

Which worked for them in some things. While the space shuttle was a tremendous piece of engineering we are still hitching rides to ISS aboard Russian rockets that really aren't that much more advanced then what what they were using in the late 60's.

Mind you, some pieces of Soviet engineering they had a different view point on then we did. Take the AK-47 for example. It is renowned for its durability and is still the most popular battle rifle around the world despite being a 70 year old design. Vastly superior, many would say, to the American designed M16.

Which is why it is a surprise to most folks to hear that the Soviets were horrified when they first heard about the M16 in the field. It was far more accurate then the AK-47 (factory made, you can get a hand made one that is quite accurate) especially when firing an extended burst. It was lighter so a soldier could carry more ammunition for it. And the 5.56 round was better at penetrating body armor. "Every man in a squad is a machine gunner with an M16!"

Which is why Russian troops today (and most former Eastern Bloc countries like Poland) carry the AK-74, the Russian redesigned M16. Its only now being replaced by the AK-100 series... itself copy of the M4 carbine used by American forces.

When I was five (1955) my brother and I decided to dig to China beginning in our garden in the back yard. We got shovels and other implements of destruction like a post hole digger and began our work. For three days we dug and then our dad come home one day and made us stop at 3 feet penetration into the earth. Maybe 3 and a half feet. It was a long time ago.

I have always wondered why he made us quit.

I never considered Krypton - Perhaps I now have an answer to my questions from so many years back....
