Why do away with the crystal football?

I get that the national championship re-branded with the playoffs, but who was the genius who decided to scrap what was probably the coolest trophy concept in all of sports, and replace it with what looks like a giant fricking tube of lipstick?

The lipstick tube is cheaper and a hell of a lot less fragile. It's still sad.

Completely agree. The NC trophy looks like shite and looks cheap. I loved the crystal football.

I don’t know for certain, so don’t quote me, but I believe that it was a Waterford Crystal trophy, and if I am not mistaken, Waterford closed up shop a couple of years ago.
I’m being lazy, in case any of you “link, or it didn’t happen” millennials are out there just waiting to jump on anything anyone says from memory.
Edit: here’s the answer...I was completely wrong, but am man enough to leave the original post up for people to laugh at and bitch about.

The coaches trophy is still awarded to the team just not on the field.

Not sure why Georgia cares. It’s not like they will ever have to put it on display in their trophy case.

The BCS issued them retroactively to the schools with concensus NC awards that came before it, too.
