It's an absolute zoo right now, the game day atmospheres and a fall Saturday in the south are still a thing of beauty but the business of college football has lost any and all romanticism it had. It's like the pros but with zero structure just a buck wild free for all with no rules or regulations.

I actually thought this was one of the best years of college football overall in a long time.

I still think it will eventually be ruined for good with NIL and the coaches salaries. I hope I’m wrong.

The nationalization of the sport ruined it.

With all due respect, how? It's the most down year since probably 2007 and the #1 team destroyed everyone all season.

Yep, I posted in a Lincoln Riley thread on the MSB that one thing that can save the sport is teams from other regions getting good again and stop funneling all the talent to the same 2-3 programs on the other side of the country.

Florida schools, USC, Texas need to get it together and bring some regional flavor back to the sport and increase the competitiveness and parity in the sport.

They are trying to expand the playoffs to 16 teams when we can't even get competitive games in a 4 team playoff most years. It's ridiculous.

I miss being able to follow recruiting knowing that the dude would be at the school for 3-4 years and get to see how they grow/develop. Now we have a special day to announce all the kids that are leaving, and it may not be an insignificant number.

The best time was probably the 1980s.

Games were on TV more than the 1960s/1970s, but not every game was on a 4 hour broadcast.

The SEC had 10 teams.

If you won the league- Sugar Bowl.

As a college football fan the season has been very good this year.

As an Auburn football fan it's been disappointing.

The game is definitely changing so I understand the feeling. I don't like it but those that change with the game will be the most successful and we need to make sure we are in the Top 10 of those programs. Not in the 11-20 range. So complex problems need great solutions to put our team in the best possibly position.

Now the players don't even care. They get to the Sugar Bowl just to quit. Ridiculous.

OSU lost, OU is out, You only had one team, Uga, that you pretty much knew would win. Upsets every week.

Major debates of who was teams 2-8 in the rankings.

Baylor and OSU kicking the two teams asses leaving the Big 12

You had great games with us at Penn St

Oregon taking down OSU, Michigan taking down OSU, Mich St coming back and taking Michigan down. I could go on but that is a few. BY U running roughshod over the PAC 12 this year is another.

Utah making a huge recovery after starting slow and tragedy hitting their program.

If down to you is the same teams ruling football then yeah I can see your point.

I don’t just look at the SEC when discussing the state of football.

I think you hit the nail on the head… the gameday experience itself is still there (Saturday was a great example)… but everything else about the game is moving to minor league football.

Me either, that's the problem. The entire state of Florida is terrible. The entire west is terrible. Texas is terrible.

Maybe I'm wrong but Michigan, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State. If that is three of your 4 playoff teams? Those teams just don't have the talent you would expect a playoff team to have and the playoff would be a foregone conclusion. I'm happy not to see Clemson, OSU, and OU but the talent is so concentrated most other teams seems pretty meh.

Yeah they are bad in Florida but other teams emerged.

Meh, the playoffs suck as currently in place. I’m just glad to see new names. You bet that is what I want. Playoffs need to be expanded anyway. If OSU, OU, etc can’t win their conference damn right they don’t belong. Those teams that now have a chance played their asses off and won what they needed.

Yeah I enjoy that. So you are for status quo teams in playoffs? Cool.

I may be explaining myself wrong here. Like I said I agree the football we all used to love is nit coming back in that form. The other poster was exactly right, recruiting is national now. Teams are trying to copy the success of SEC teams and working to grab recruits from the Southern Region.

With that in mind I found a different way to enjoy football this year and there was also some good football out there. It also was fun because fans were back and it made it more interesting. Money is the absolute king now and those who know how to wield that money and power will sit atop.

So yes I enjoyed the Baylor’s, and Itah’s, OKie State, etc being a factor. I like that with all of Bama’s success and recruiting prowess we should have beat them because our guys put all of it in the line.

I'm not sure I understand this. When the playoffs get expanded those are the teams that will be in it pretty much every season.

Again, I don't need to see OSU, OU, and Clemson but I also don't really care to see Cincy and OSU who will just get blown out by UGA or any elite team on a given year.

I want to see USC, Miami, FSU, Florida, Texas, LSU, Michigan, (glad they had a successful year).

Yeah I enjoy that.

You're telling me you are looking forward to UGA-Cincy and Ok St-Michigan in the playoffs? If so, happy for you but those rating will be abysmal. One random team a year is fine, three because everyone else is so down. That doesn't do it for me.

However, that was not really the point of the OP at all.

I don’t disagree at all but it is never going back especially with NIL. They can say all they want it can’t be used to recruit but bullshite, it’s going to be some the highest bidders will get the best.

So I agree I will forever miss the more Amateur and regional play and recruiting, but it’s not going to revert back sadly.

Yeah I’m fine with a shake up and having some of those teams in the playoffs. The ratings may be bad but I watch football foe my entertainment and I’m not considering yours.

Also, some of those big name schools were getting blown out anyway.

I partially blame BSPN. They control college football, the eye test, etc. they helped keep Auburn out of the BCS in 2004.

Now with 100 percent free agency the game is in trouble. even the NFL does not have unlimited free agency.

I really haven’t paid much attention to it at all in the past 3 years. Tuned in this past Saturday and just rolled my eyes at how overtime now feels more like soccer with the sudden death 2 point conversion. If that’s the way things are headed I’d find it much more entertaining to have the kickers face off in a series of increasing length field goal attempts.

The one thing that would help it the most isn’t happening anytime soon. Mark Emmert got an extension. He hired Saban at LSU, Kirby worked for Saban for years…. Until the rules apply the same for everyone nothing is getting better.
