Let’s examine how we have arrived at a 6 and 3 record. I’m sure everyone has seen me bitching about recruiting and that’s exactly why we are at 6 and 3.

We have played 3 teams with more “talent”. LSU, aTm, and UGA. We are 1-2 in those games. We played 1 team with equal talent. Penn St. We are 0-1 in that game.

The rest of our games we have been the more talented team and are 5-0.

Whoever was the first coach to say that Jimmies and Joe’s beats X’s and O’s was exactly 100% correct.

I like Harsin, I like his demeanor, I like how he holds players accountable, he and Bobo seem to be good “scheme” and developers.

Bottom line is we are about 5th in talent in the conference. We will probably finish around 4th overall.

Need to win the games we are supposed to and hopefully pull out an Ironbowl win and finish 9-3. I predicted preseason 8-4.

Yep, especially on the line of scrimmage. Also, our 5* QB isn’t living up to his ranking. So those highly rank players have to pan out too.

Did recruiting take a hit due to Uncle Milty (McGregor) passing away in 2018? Untraceable casino cash is what Danny Sheridan was referring to all these years.

ETA: I have always thought it had everything to do with him being harassed by the Bob Riley administration. Football runs the state and most judges went to Bama. Couldn’t have us catching up with their REC. Wonder if Paul Bryant Jr. still owns Greenetrack in Greene Co.? Hypocrites.

First person I ever heard utter that phrase was Al Borges when taking over the O in 04.

I predicted 6-6 or 7-5 due to Oke Miss and Arkansas being on an upward trajectory last season.

So, as far as I'm concerned, we are ahead of schedule.

Bottom line is we have to get close in talent. Top 10 classes are fine we can make a run when we have experienced players with that but in the SEC climate today you have to sprinkle a top 5 class in about every 3 years.

We are good football team and the kids themselves seem like good people. But to compete for championships every year we have to be elite every where.

I’m not calling for any coaches to be fired. But our “southern connections” haven’t paid off at all. Caddy is a middling recruiter at a great school with tradition at his position. He finished off the Tank recruiting but UGA also didn’t prioritize him like we did. Outside of that he hasn’t done well. No clue what to make of coach Key but ain’t looking good at a position of dire need immediately. We have no linebackers committed and all 3 starters could possibly leave. Eason has a great personality but does it translate to recruiting. Zac love the guy but I think it’s to early in his career to have brought him back home but I understand why Harsin did. Also is Mason and Eason just hanging out a year or 2 to get to the NFL? Watts I think has the ability to recruit and Schmedding is being groomed to be the DC but those guys gotta get it rolling.

Since Dell didn’t get the job he was going for I think you make a run at him now. See if he can come home to momma and and slay it here to would be a good boost for him to also work out from under another coach. Corey Raymond not sure if he’s still at LSU but I think he is. Throw the bank at that guy right now and see if you can snatch him away.

Bobo and friend they are doing ok. Not bad but not great. A lot for them will be momentum on the trail. Top players now all want to go to one team instead of blazing their own trail.

I think back to how easy it was for me when I was coaching my sons in travel baseball. Oh the high school coach, I could get all the top 4 from my area automatically for whichever age group. Then add a couple other kids from towns near by that wanted to play for a high school coach. There’s half your team that is highly talented go find 2 elite pitchers and fill in with a couple great athletes. Winning! So even though I won’t and never will ask a kid to leave a school to come play for me I have “recruited” before at a minor level and the same 4 teams the top 4 in the state is going after the same 3-4 players each year.

Also in a year that LSU, UF, and USCe are all shite shows. We should be all over the state of Georgia and Florida. Constantly. Just wearing on those boys. Clemson is showing cracks use it keep them out of the Atlanta metro. The iron is hot it’s time to strike and we are pussing out.

Rant off now

Most predictions were 7-5 (6-6 to 8-4). Winning two SEC road games was huge, especially at LSU. Need to win the next two to go to 8-3. Then the IB. Then a bowl game. With Gus I think we would be 5-4 at best.

I disagree I think we probably have the same record. 8-4 was the issue with Gus his scheme wouldn’t allow for more but had talent everywhere but WR and OL.

And both of those are showing up big in lack of talent this year.

Dye said, “ain’t no miracles on the football field.”

Basically you must be good enough upfront for at least a stalemate. You can scheme some, but the talent gap can not be huge if you want to compete for championships. This is no secret: the best teams over a decade will be strong In The trenches and DEEP.

9-3 or 8-4 regular season is at the top end of what I reasonably expected at the beginning of the season. I'm sure I would have found a way to justify 6-6 too with some homerish pretzel-logic, so I'm fine with where we are.

I wish we were recruiting better, but this happens with first year staffs. It happend with Saban at Alabama. It takes about a year+ to get going but I think we'll be fine.

Nix's efficiency erodes when he plays "dudes" on other SEC teams. He's really good otherwise. Stan White and Jason Campbell did this until they were seniors. He's gotten much better but certainly not great against great teams. He's good though.

Really impressed with Mason not giving up points and TD's in the red zone. You know Harsin is too. Not a dominant group but just getting better and better IMO. I wonder why Tennison hasn't been playing more because he was all over the place. Probably an assignment issue because Mason's scheme requires more.

I'm still a huge, huge fan of Bobo but I wonder with this OL group and RB's if we'd be better offensively if we were closer to 60/40 run/pass. We also need to run more 12 and 13 personel. We are legitimately 5-6 deep with TE's.

Saban signed the #1 class his first full year. He also stole some guys from Tubs his very first class when he came in.

We have to do better recruiting. Just no other way to spin it.

Gus signed the #6 class in 2013. It can be done

We are about where I thought we would be. I felt it was a 7-5 year with 8-4 being the ceiling. I think that is where we are.

Its about wins and loses. You can say we look better, we are getting better, we are in games, bla bla bla. Its always about winning and losing.

The new coaching staff has done well with a few things and let a few things fall between the cracks. They beat LSU on the road, though its not a normal LSU team, which was awesome. They also beat a couple of ranked teams.

We did however lose to Penn St which is a game we have been winning and we lost in College Station for the first time.

George was typical, as was Ole Miss. We should beat them. If we can beat State, like we should and SC, the bama game will be our season;

We can stop the from going to the playoffs which is a feather in our hats at home where we have been beating them

Lots to play for and if we can get a few more wins and a bowl game win, which Gus sucked at, I would say its a successful season

Saban was only out of the SEC for two years, was a known name to a lot of the players being recruited, and already had some established relationships from his time at LSU.

They are Alabama, we are Permian HS in recruiting comparatively. Maybe it changes with NIL.

I’m not comparing Saban to Harsin. I was just correcting someone saying it took a while for him to get going recruiting at uat, which it didn’t. And I don’t expect the #1 or even at top 5 class for Harsin right away. But I do expect at least a top 15 class, and that is looking unlikely right now. I said before the season, I expected 9-3 with a bowl win to get to 10 wins. But I was also counting on beating Penn State.
