Article title says he was 57, but he was actually 75

quote:

Unfortunately, Joe Lee Dunn’s cause of death at the age of 75 is yet to be announced, but we are waiting for more official information, so stay with us.
Joseph Levi “Joe Lee” Dunn was born on July 14, 1946. He was a former football player who was widely credited with inventing the attacking 3-3-5 scheme that has been used by several teams.

He had some damn good defenses at Mississippi State.

No. 1 defense in the country in 1999. We went 10-2 with one of the worst offenses in SEC history. If we would have been average on offense, that could have been the year State won the SEC.

Man that’s sad. Guy was such a character and definitely a memorable figure from 90s through early 00s SEC football, which I still feel was the funnest era of the league.

Correct me if I’m wrong State fans, but didn’t he not wear socks? I feel like I remember that being one of his quirks

Probably didn't own a pair. He was a good DC if he had the players. His fault was that he wouldn't change his scheme when he didn't have the players.

Hate seeing the guys from that generation go. I came of age in the mid 90s-mid 00s and those will always be the glory days of the SEC for me.

RIP Coach

Sad to hear.

Had a long conversation with a coach that worked with him at state. Stories were hilarious. Joe Lee carried a couple miniature whisky bottles to practice and would take a pull during water breaks

Which was fine when he had lock down corners. Some Florida receivers are still past our corners on some of those blitzes.

Had Ole Miss ranked #1 in total defense in ‘93. Served as interim HC in ‘94 and the team competed all season minus the Arkansas game. RIP Joe Lee
