If they try to keep him out of heaven, he'll just blitz with nine in the box until they bust through the gates. Sad news to hear.

Watching him on the sidelines was often more entertaining then the game.

May he rest in peace.

He had the Gamecock defense nicknamed "The fire ants" since we wore our all garnets and attacked. Great coordinator, reminds me a little of Brent Venerables. When he has the guys for it, he was aggressive with his looks, when he doesnt have his guys the system doesnt work

In 1999, Mississippi State allowed just 121 points in 8 SEC games. That's 15.1 points per game. To put that into perspective, only a few teams have equaled or bettered that number in recent years:

2009 Alabama and Florida
2011 Alabama and LSU
2012 Florida and Alabama
2013 Alabama
2016 Alabama
2017 Alabama and Georgia
2018 Mississippi State
2019 Georgia
2021 Georgia (thus far)

At USC in 87' his defense gave up 11.75 points per game. Only 3 teams scored more than 15 points and they were ranked

#2
#2
#7 (LSU)
impressive to say the least

Joe Lee had them blitzing before they got off the team bus.

Dunn played his college ball at Chattanooga under another legend, Scrappy Moore.

Joe Lee definitely got it done when he had the right players to do it. Unfortunately, I also think he eventually got figured out and that's the biggest reason he flamed out.

There are schools out there running versions of JLD's defense today (State with Arnett is one of them). But they are far more multiple with their looks and disguises than JLD was, and much more strategic with pressure.

Absolutely!!! in a similar vein, Spurriers Fun n Gun offense looks incredibly simple compared to some of whats run today. When he was at USC I think he adapted some, while still being able to put his spin on stuff. That worked well for him and he was able to adapt.

He had some damn good defenses at Mississippi State.

Cole Cubelic is reminiscing about his Auburn days and them just being lost against JLD defenses. I remember those late 90s State teams being an absolute handful to do anything against with the ball.

He is one of the all-time characters in SEC football history. RIP Joe Lee Dunn.

I'll stick up for Jackie. JLD got fired - he didn't leave because he wanted to, and JLD was bitter about it.
The Memphis coaches were talking shite. Joe Lee telling folks he had the game circled on the calendar. State was hot garbage that year and losing to everyone. Jackie didn't talk before the game....he waited until it was over. Tommy West was a rustled bitch of a sore loser there. He let his guys' mouths write checks that their asses couldn't cash, and he didn't like getting called out for it.

I still love JLD though. One of my favorite all time coaches at State

And I'll stick up for Coach Tommy. He was 100% right. You wanna say something to JLD, go fricking say it yourself. You gonna fire a coach and then talk shite about him to his new HC after a win? Have some class

He probably would have said it to JLD if the guy hadn't opened a can of haul-arse and gotten out of there. Clearly, Jackie didn't have an issue saying anything to anyone over the years. And he didn't start it - he finished it.

Butthurt Memphis fan I see.

I wouldn't be talking shite about Memphis after 2 straight losses to them in basketball & football over the past year. lol
