Damn that sucks. A true legend of this league. One of the great characters of the 90s.

Sockless forever

His signals were something to watch. Not sure I ever figured them out but he almost always blew through a balled up fist. I expected chicken feathers to come out at any moment.

His defenses didn't always work, but they were entertaining. Kind of like a defensive version of Kiffin.

The best defense he ever put in the field was at Ole Miss. I forget the year but David Palmer switched to QB in the 3rd quarter of the Bama Ole Miss game, down 7-3 and had -10 yards rushing. He took the snap from shotgun and ran left or right every play as Bama pulled out a 19-14 win in Oxford. Rebels had #1 defense in the nation, but some dude named Lawrence Adams at QB and rarely scored all season. Defense gave up like 210 yds total per game but lost 6 times

The catalyst for the Tommy West versus Jackie Sherrill confrontation after State beat Memphis. "Tell Joe Lee I'm glad he wrote it down on his calendar."

Had a long conversation with a coach that worked with him at state. Stories were hilarious. Joe Lee carried a couple miniature whisky bottles to practice and would take a pull during water breaks

Fred Smoot was a character himself. I remember Jackie Sherrill discussing Joe Lee Dunn defense and Fred Smoot's ability to rustle a receiver he would have to cover. He would find out a lot of personal info on the guy like his girlfriends name, his sisters name, where he spent his last vacation etc etc.

Then before the snap or after a pass attempt , Smoot would start dropping stuff like "Man, your girlfriend Stacy is crazy in bed" or "Did your sister Sandra tell you I'm the father?"

Smoot would get so inside the guys head that he would lose his cool and focus and be less effective catching the ball or running routes lol.

That was 1993. Worst thing was Tim Bowens rolling over Jay Barker and injuring his shoulder. They put Palmer in and the game was done. I was a student at the time.

RIP sir

After Joe Lee left Miss State to go back to Memphis (or had Jackie fired him?), Jackie Sherrill comes up to Tommy West after the game and says "tell Joe Lee I'm glad he circled this game on his calender"

Then Tommy and Jackie go at it

here's the video tell Joe Lee I'm glad he circled us on his calender

I remember State and Sherrill weren't all that appreciative of Joe Lee after he left...

No class from Jackie

Was that our "Rose Bowl" year?

Rose Bowl year was 2001 when we returned nearly everyone from that 2000 team that was really good.

That team beat both SEC Championship participants, which I believe has only been done one other time.

Joe Lee was awesome. I've always hated that it fell apart at the end for him and Jackie. Their last couple of years together didn't go well but at their peak, those State teams were a lot of fun to watch in that era. They won more games than anybody else in the West from 1997-2000, and probably should have gotten to Atlanta more than the one time.

I'll stick up for Jackie. JLD got fired - he didn't leave because he wanted to, and JLD was bitter about it.
The Memphis coaches were talking shite. Joe Lee telling folks he had the game circled on the calendar. State was hot garbage that year and losing to everyone. Jackie didn't talk before the game....he waited until it was over. Tommy West was a rustled bitch of a sore loser there. He let his guys' mouths write checks that their asses couldn't cash, and he didn't like getting called out for it.

I still love JLD though. One of my favorite all time coaches at State.

No. 1 defense in the country in 1999. We went 10-2 with one of the worst offenses in SEC history.

In 1999, Mississippi State allowed just 121 points in 8 SEC games. That's 15.1 points per game. To put that into perspective, only a few teams have equaled or bettered that number in recent years:

2009 Alabama and Florida
2011 Alabama and LSU
2012 Florida and Alabama
2013 Alabama
2016 Alabama
2017 Alabama and Georgia
2018 Mississippi State
2019 Georgia
2021 Georgia (thus far)
