Tennessee has suffered 2 decades of horrible football...still 2 spots above Georgia (as far back as this calculator goes).
1869-2020
10) Tennessee - 0.671
12) Georgia - 0.656

Bad coaching. UT has always had to recruit against the rest of the SEC. People in this thread be acting like UGA or UF or Bama suddenly just came onto the scene in the last 10 years. The only team that came onto the scene in that time is Clemson.
Also part of it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. UT fans expect terribleness and that's what they get.

He went 7-6 his first SEC season and then left. You can't just say "he was a bad hire." It's impossible to know what he would have done had he stayed. Kirby Smart had 0 yrs as HC experience...did that make him a bad hire?
Should have hired Gary Patterson though.
So 7-6 and then leaving in the middle of the night right before signing day wasn't bad?

UGA leads the series now though.

How else did they recruit 5 star talent nationally to come and play in Knoxville damn Tennessee with a hillbilly fan base?
Because they were putting the most players in the NFL at the time, just behind Miami I believe.

Took him lying to the ncaa to manage it.

I think were saying the same thing just looking at it with different perspectives. In 2009, he was not a bad hire. Right now looking back, obviously he was a bad hire considering what he ended up doing. But that wasn't because he was a "bad coach" per se, just an a-hole.
My point is that had he remained fully devoted to the VOLS and hadn't bailed, he might have been able to rack up a pretty good record here.

Vols hated the hire at the time.

The opinions of a fanbase don't determine whether a hire was good or not, especially ours.
We complain about everything.

When does uga pass vols in wins? 2022 is reasonable

It’s not really a hill. Lane kiffin wasn’t a bad hire, until he was. Just depends on what perspective you look at it from. We obviously have different ones

It is though. 4-15 record as a HC and left in the middle of the night before signing day.

Tennessee took a high risk high reward gamble on a promising offensive mind.
It's the direct result of the Fulmer and Clawson marriage.

As a HC in the NFL. Which, as Spurrier, Saban, and Meyer have shown, is a different animal altogether.
He was also at USC from 2001 from 2006 when they went 63-12 and won a few natties

Which wasn't a consideration when he was hired

I agree about Kiffin being a good hire. He was a hotshot coordinator before his disastrous stint with the Raiders. Had Tennessee hired him before he took the Raiders job, it would've been viewed like hiring Sark, Richt, Smart, etc.
