Looking back at that hiring search and the concerns for each candidate.
The major concern with Patterson was running a 4-2-5 base defense.
Whether or not Kelly could recruit nationally.
Lane's inexperience but promising to bring his Dad and Eddie O.

This. TN isn't GA or LA talent-wise, but it's not terrible.
Ole Miss and Vandy (when Franklin was there) were cleaning up in Memphis, Notre Dame has recruited some middle Tennessee guys, and Clemson has gotten some guys from east Tennessee. Even Memphis has gotten some skill position guys who were good enough to play at Tennessee. Factor in that Bama and LSU have both gotten studs from Tennessee the last few years, and you have what you see listed above.

I disagree here as it relates to UGA. UT in the late 90's had (from the state of Ga) Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, Deon Grant, Mercedes Hamilton, and more. They were feasting in Ga. Their simply not getting their pick of Ga talent any more.

Yes. Full circle. Cause and effect. They got the great recruits in with promise of a mini kingdom with no accountability. That produced a lot of NFL players. The difference between them and Miami was that Miami really didn’t have to leave the state of Florida. When the snitch went in to save UTs arse, their compliance changed everything and nothing has been the same since.
