Buck Owens was cool and the Beatles liked him enough to cover some of his songs. The Bakersfield sound was quite the contrast of the Nashville sound of the 60s. Twangy electric guitars with a backbeat. 21 number one hits in a row.

If it wasn't for King Biscuit Time in Helena, many of these blues musicians wouldn't have been heard and generations of American music in the future would have been in jeopardy.

Weird not to see Billstown born Glen Campbell mentioned.

And if you have to go modern, at least have the sense to pick Ashley McBride before a Justin Moore.

If you do this based on actual universities artists attended and not just state they are from, A&M wins by a mile.

I forgot a bout this diamond in the rough, folk singer Jimmy Driftwood. Famous for writing the song the battle of New Orleans. He was inspired writing the song teaching a history where the students were bored and needed them to be more interested in American history.

Johnny Horton called him and asked permission to sing it and was allowed to do so. It became a smash it in the late 50s.

Other hits were Tennessee stud. He wrote over 6,000 folks songs that were recorded by more than 300 various artists.

Helena and the Arkansas delta has many unknown blues artists that helped shape the music of the United states. And because of the close proximity to the state of Mississippi, many have lived, moved back and forth across the Mississippi River.

Conway aka Harold Jenkins was born in Friars Point but raised in Helena.

He once auditioned for Sun Records but was turned down by Sam Phillips as he already had an Elvis.
