The man deserves recognition on the more heavily visited site.

RIP, Sir! You've certainly earned it.

My grandfather served under him at Iwo Jima, also getting a Silver Star. He died young, back in the 1960s. I never got to meet him, but am named after him.

My wife works in a VA nursing home. She has one resident born in 1913. He's a WWII vet. I'd love to hear the tales he could tell.

In spite of the politically charged nonsense and nothingness that dominates the news, I think (maybe naively hope and want to believe) that we'd all be humbled at the resiliency and will that is still resident within the American people if asked to face a similar threat today.

My thought is certainly hypothetical, what is fact is that a generation of men and women rose up to secure the future we enjoy today.

Thanks again. SIR!

I hope you’re right, but after the last 18 months my faith in it is severely diminished from its relatively low level prior. Almost everyone I know in the military is getting out, retirement sooner than planned and before retirement because of how it’s changed for the worse. Even the good ole boys not in the military did virtually nothing with covid tyranny.

While true, I imagine his perspective is quite different and more fitting of the hat's tag. 50% of the heroes (Sergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousley) in that iconic image were KIA before the battle was over.

There is always a mom's basement dwelling troll out there who thinks they are edgy.

Rest in Peace Sir and Rise in Glory.

So many of these men were just kids. He passed at 102 and Iwo Jima was almost 80 years ago.

Who downvoted? Trash person.

My grandad was a WWII marine vet. Flew 35 missions as a tail gunner in a dauntless dive bomber from 16-20 years old.

These Americans were INCREDIBLE.

RIP and Semper Fi.
