Texas People: Is there a good Tex Mex restaurant in Austin

I can find better Sushi places. My parents live there 30 years ago or so I remember a lot of good Tex Mex places. I have tried about a dozen and some like Touchys have been ok, but not nearly as good as I expected.
Is there anything like Superior Grill in the Austin area.

Not sure if serious.
You can’t throw a stone anywhere in Texas without hitting an amazing TexMex restaurant.
Torchy’s isn’t TexMex; it’s fast food.

Chuy’s is overrated but not amazing.

Some don't like Mexican unless it's a Taco bell cruch wrap and Diablo sauce.
Nothing wrong with that; we just all have a different perspective.
My worldview is that the best mex or TexMex places are white cheese dip, busboys that don't speak English, wait staff who barely speak English, cheap/tacky Mexican restaurant colorful furniture and murals, and a completely independent family run joint with store made tortillas.

Once it became a chain it tanked—which is the story with most restaurants.

Absolutely

But OP asked for good TexMex, then mentioned Torchy’s.
Not a bad little joint but hardly a “good TexMex restaurant.”

Matt’s El Rancho
Fonda San Miguel
I don’t live there now, so i’m sure there are other great places.. but you can’t go wrong with either of those.

Tried it was ok. I have no problems in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, hell even Beaumont abs Corpus Christi have great places. But not in Austin, maybe it’s considered cultural appropriation or something. No trouble with steak houses, BBQ, hell I found good stone crab claws. Going to try again this weekend. We have better places in mobile, but no Superior, they went to Mountainbrook

Chuys, Pappasitos, and Lupe Tortilla are all Chains with multiple locations but are excellent
My favorite of the Austin icons is Matt's El Rancho but there are a ton of others
For just some great quick tacos it's Torchys or Taco Deli.
Still the truly best Tex Mex is in San Antonio.
Wbile you are there though get some BBQ. Forget about waiting in line at Franklins. Go to La Barbecue or Stiles Switch. If you can drive out of town go to Smitty's or Kruetz's in Lockhart or Salt Lick in Driftwood. If you want the best drive an hour on Saturday morning and go to Snows in Lexington (only open Saturdays until they sell out).

I came into this thread after reading the title and fully expected a punch line within.
I'm disappointed that an insult wasn't hurled at the horns by the OP.

Matt’s El Rancho is great.
People usually enjoy Maudies too.

I don't think so
You'll probably have to drive up to Broken Arrow and settle for Ted's

Just drive down to San Antonio - hard to mess that up

Chuy’s is massively overrated and closer to southwestern food than Tex Mex.
Pick any hole in the wall for better comida.

Is Baby Acapulco's still a thing? Used to have lethal margaritas and some really good mushroom enchiladas.
