Statement from the Big 12 Conference
Story LinksToday the Big 12 Conference received notice from University of Oklahoma President Joe Harroz and University of Texas President Jay Hartzell that their universities do not intend to extend their Grant of Rights when the current agreement expires on June 30, 2025.
“Although our eight members are disappointed with the decisions of these two institutions, we recognize that intercollegiate athletics is experiencing rapid change and will most likely look much different in 2025 than it does currently,” stated Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “The Big 12 Conference will continue to support our member institutions’ efforts to graduate student-athletes, and compete for Big 12 and NCAA championships. Like many others, we will use the next four years to fully assess what the landscape will look like in 2025 and beyond. The remaining eight institutions will work together in a collaborative manner to thoughtfully and strategically position the Big 12 Conference for continued success, both athletically and academically, long into the future.”

It looks like they intend to hold sooner and longhorn in the conference until 2025.

Acceptance and notice they expect both OU and shitstain to remain through 2025.

More likely they're expecting a pile of cash within the next year.

That's always been the biggest liability with the Big 12. Most member institutions have no where else to go. The Big 12 will survive because nobody else wants the remaining 8 schools. OU and UT are going to be stuck in limbo for a while.

Yeah, this will drag on.
Gives member schools time to create workout, parachute solutions. Also, gives the "P4" leagues & TV distributors time to plan & coordinate what the new CF league looks like.

It also gives us time to lobby for east coast schools instead.

Wil the Big 12 rescind the "Horns Down" rule now? Because it's coming, Baw. ... all the times.

Well. A few B12 schools aren’t getting a P5 invite no matter what. Half of them will take a TV pay cut. They will do their best to keep TV contract in place as long as possible. Can’t really blame them.
If Okie St lands in B10 and another domino falls it could implode and collapse sooner… No pun intended.

It only takes 2 more schools though right? KU and Iowa State to the B1G should do the trick

While technically true, I'll believe it when I see it.
The Big 10 has high academic standards. And from what I can see, the Big 12 leftover schools that meet the Big 10's academic standards don't bring much to the table athletically, and the schools with the valuable athletic departments don't meet the academic standards.
Tough spot.

Some 600,000 living alumni between TTU, BU and TCU.
Abbott is already being pushed in a primary coming up.
2022 is not happening. Not saying they go through 2025, but there will be politics around minimizing collateral damage.

Abbott has literally put together the largest war chest of political donations any governor of any state has ever seen. He isn’t going anywhere.
I can’t help but laugh at the fools who think the Texas legislature is going to actually be able to put the brakes on this and give itself the power to determine the athletic conference UT participates in going forward.

They need to go back to calling it the Big 8 now.
If I were them I’d try to court Nebraska and Colorado back

Why would they rush that though when if they wait they can still get those two schools after Texas and OU have paid them millions each?
Heck Kansas might prefer that to not put Kansas St on the chopping block as quickly.

The Big 10 has a very lucrative TV deal and stability. No television station is going to give the Big 12 anything close to what they currently have now that Momma and Daddy have left

Although Nebraska leaving hasn't worked out well for them...and it probably signalled the eventual implosion of the big 12...no way they'd return now. It might as well be Conference USA without Texas and Oklahoma.
Any tv contract revenue is going to fall off a cliff.
