Importance of the future of the SEC Championship Game

We know 2 things:
1. The conference is expanding, and other conferences might follow.
2. The playoffs are going to 12 teams, maybe even a shorter season based on what I read (look up Dabo asking for less games).
So given the facts above, if 4 to 5 SEC teams make the playoffs, does the SEC Championship Game mean anything anymore? Does it turn into the SEC basketball tourney of football, meaning it only matters to get a higher seed? Do you rest your starters if you’re already in or play them?
Scenario: If Georgia wins the SEC against Bama, gets knocked out in the playoffs to Clemson, and Bama wins the NC, who was better? Who gets SEC bragging rights?
I’d appreciate your guys opinions. It’s barely hitting me this is going to change a lot of things.

CFB won't go to fewer games, too much money. SEC championship game won't go away, too much money. SEC is pretty much guaranteed 4 teams in a 12 team CFP so it wont really matter anyway.

You have valid points. The SEC Championship will still mean something, just not as much.

I’ll care more about being SEC Champions than national champions.

Seeing as in the 12-team format the only way to get a top 4 seed and a bye is to be a conference champion.
So ya, it’ll matter.
No they won’t rest starters because they’d rather win and rest them before an elimination game.

“Would probably mean more if we just move it to Arlington.”

Things Aggy fans don't need to worry about.

The only thing I don’t like about a 15 game season is the risk of injury, especially with first round nfl type talent, you’re asking them to take on more risk for no money (yes NIL but that’s not retirement money) and no health care, I rather CF pay for health care and insurance for players to keep them from opting out, but maybe the players don’t mind, I always hear the NFL guys complain about extending the schedule bc they don’t make enough if they get injured

As the playoffs expand, unless there is an advantage to playing the championship game, the Bama method of losing your division and begging ESPN for a mulligan is the best route to a natty.

So the SEC Champ should get those years bragging rights over the NC if they differ?

I guess how many games are we looking at in a season for the NC winner? A 15 game slate? Only a team with no injuries or mad depth will be able to hang that long

I would prefer to see a play in type format to give other teams chances. SEC team 1 and 2 get auto bids to playoffs. SEC Team 3 plays team SEC 6; and SEC team 4 plays SEC team 5 on SEC Play In Weekend. The winners of the two games also get automatic bids.
1) Get two games , instead of one —more money
2) Keep other schools in the hunt —more interest into December across the conference
3) Play at 2 different sites —capture interests of different regions.
4) Protects teams 1 and 2 from what has become an irrelevant game that can only harm them (injury /seeding wise).

Longer than that, it's already 15 games assuming you play in your Conf. Championship Game

Winning sec championship should give you a #1 seed in most years and a bye.

Wouldn’t the SEC champion and the loser of that game be at a disadvantage playing an extra game, bc 2 other SEC teams that will make the playoffs having played one less game? Are we assuming the SEC champ gets a bye?

I would assume SEC champ is getting a bye unless we have a 2 or more loss champion.

So you’re saying each conference gets a number of automatic bids and then the conferences decide how to pick them? This would kill G5’s no?

As of yet, I've not seen any indication that the CFP has increased risk of injury for the players that end up playing the additional game. If there is actual concern about injuries due to length of season, it would seem the best course of action would be to start the season off in week zero instead of one where it starts for most schools now, and offer up 2 bye weeks during the regular season instead.

I don’t think there will be a bye to be honest, I think some teams will get in playing a game less, and maybe it’s cherry picking an example but a ND with no conference or conference championship will still make the playoffs, I feel we are making a lot of assumptions on auto bids and stuff, when it’s just going to be a CF committee ranking teams 1-12 like now
