From Ross Dellenger:

Sources tell me & @ByPatForde that the CFP working group is recommending a 12-team playoff: 6 highest-ranked conference champs & 6 at-large.

The 4 highest-ranked champs get a bye while other 8 play 1st-round games on campus.

Long way from done, but this is the recommendation.

Utilize existing bowls or use home field advantage to host.

I’d rather see 8. A bye week for the top four teams is a massive advantage, unless the rounds are spread out across a few weeks.

Completely agree. If we’re going to increase, 8 is plenty. Anyone getting a bye is garbage.

I think 6 is plenty. 12 will be the end of the regular season.

A 12-team playoff would be NFL Lite - only without salary caps and limited free agency through the transfer portal. Which will naturally result in the same collection of superpowers getting in every year, as without the above there will be no parity whatsoever.

If that's what they want, that's what they'll get. But it won't be the sport we grew up with.

Yeah. You can go ahead and pencil in Bama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Gus, and Clemson every year

I like expanding the playoffs. I think back to 2017 and our loss to UCF. if that was a playoff game, it would have been great.

I was listening to SXM Off Campus yesterday and one of the people (not sure if Mark Packard or his co-host) said that one of the coaches they spoke to said they will not recruit HS kids anymore just hit the portal each year.

I really like this idea, could you imagine hosting a CFP playoff game

6 highest-ranked conference champs

Wonder if this will be the P5 and 1 G5 champ or truly top 6 ranked conference champs, where last year a Cincy or Coastal gets in over an Oregon.

6 at-large.

I wonder if there will be certain rules or just the next 6 ranked teams. 2020 would have been
ND, TX A&M, UF, UGA, ISU, & Indiana with Pac 12 still left out

Dont think Gus will keep UCF at the top.

From my reading of everything today, mostly on Twitter...
Top 6 ranked conference champions out of all conferences - no one is guaranteed anything. If it was in place last year, Cincy/Coastal gets in, Oregon doesn't.

Top 4 ranked conference champions get the bye week. Unless they permanently join the ACC or another conference, ND will never get a bye week.

Most likely the four teams that lose the first round on campus games will not go to bowl games - the first round is their post season.

Don't forget the Notre Shame...they will get pushed in there and some weak PAC-12 team...

I hate to bring in all the a-hole writers but here is another:
From Brett McMurphy
“Pending approval - which it will be approved - @CFBPlayoff headed to 12 teams. Earliest start would be after 2023 regular season, sources told @Stadium. Because of impact of expanded playoff, expect anywhere from 4-10 bowls to be eliminated by 2023, sources said”

Brett McMurphy
@Brett_McMurphy
Last year when I contacted all 130 FBS ADs, 72 percent wanted an 8-team playoff & only 11 percent wanted more than 8 teams. Clearly, they decided bigger was better in going to 12 teams. Expect the 12-team @CFBPlayoffformat to start after 2023 regular season.

They and other independents won’t be able to qualify for 1st round byes at least.

If 12 is the number why not 16. Equals the playing field of no byes and would be the same amount of weekends played as 12 teams.

Top 8 teams play at home. Round 2 at neutral sites pre-selected not selected for regional reasons. Final 4 played in Indoor domes so that you can play in the north some in the deep winter. Finals in warm climate outdoors.

but just think about the money it would generate for the SEC. We could get three teams in. I like it!
