It's always been our calling card - and not with a real pretty history.

It's just a terrible practice. There are plenty of ways to create bonds between a group of kids and teach them to like and respect your organization without the type of stuff that a lot of people did (and apparently still do). Add in the fact that it is generally done without a clear mind (whether drunk or, worse, under the influence of cocaine or whatever kids are doing now), and it's dangerous and even deadly.

I wish they would stay open until 10 again.

George, I agree with everything you just said. I actually like living in Mobile, people couldn’t be nicer but you always feel like an outsider in Bama. Louisiana people are almost too open and friendly. Mississippi may be perfect mix

Man you should come have drinks with us during the season at Hero's at Hillcrest and Old Shell. Nice mix of alumni from Auburn, Alabama, LSU and USA just watching games. Good folks all-around...I will buy the first round and appetizers.

This is a complex issue, but I do have some perspective. My wife teaches at a university in Alabama, and my son is a college recruiter.

Several reasons:

1. Educational funding in Alabama forces Alabama to pursue other non-traditional funding origins - that is, not directly from the state but rather a large portion from out of state students and also athletic funding. In that regards, Nick Saban's salary is one of the best investments on the planet. The success of Alabama athletics has both brought in millions of dollars and thousands of new students. Are there better schools out there? Of course. But despite that, Alabama IS a pretty good college and is nationally ranked in many programs. The sports teams bring a lot of exposure and marketing.

2. A lot of out of state students attending Bama is due to the other states school funding structure. Example - in Texas, you are guaranteed a slot at a state school if you finish in the top ten percent of your HS class. But there literally are not enough GOOD slots open due to the population growth. You might have a kid who is a legacy for Univ of Texas, have a 4.2 GPA, come from an affluent family... and the only slot opening for them is at UTEP or N. Texas State. the family can afford it, so the kid ends up at Bama, Ole Miss, etc etc etc. Texas has literally added the equivalent population of the entire state of Alabama in the last few years.

3. In many cases, Bama's out of state tuition is cheaper than in-state at many schools. This is a good case for all the Illinois students who drive due south to Bama.

4. Weather is a factor. While we have four seasons here, the winters are short and mild. This is a lot bigger deal to a lot of people than you might think.

5. Academic standing is rising. The average incoming freshman's ACT score is 27 and trending to 28. That sort of boggles my mind as an AVERAGE. I had an academic scholarship to Bama when I attended with not much more.

6. Greek life does have a draw and impact. See some of the other points above... you may have a Greek legacy student who can't get into a particular fraternity/sorority where they originally wanted to go because of quotas or cost... but they can get into Bama and into the Greek system.

Anyway, just some thoughts.
Didn't read coming from you. I would ask if you even went to Alabama, but then again... I know that Alabama is equivalent to a flag ship community college, so I don't give a shite.

Also, university prestige/credibility is about yield-based rankings, not acceptance rate. What is Alabama's yield, and what is the historical trend over the last decade? Until then you can't say anything about my baws in LA. Just because LSU has a higher acceptance rate, lower scores, less % of OOS students [thank football], etc. does not mean you can trash LSU considering Alabama is not much better. You will always have someone else looking down on you finding this ironic.

So you can ridicule a very well articulated post without actually looking at previous links in this very thread or doing actually research yourself? Just for record from multiple sources and publications on here Alabama actually ranks ahead of LSU in the stuff you listed. Here's one

US news

Not that both being 140+ is something to brag about.

If you're not in the top 20, I don't care baw. I see my school ranked in the top 10 or so of the first page, where's 'Bama?

With most of the other poor southern state schools.

Some great programs, some good programs, some meh programs. If you apply yourself and make good grades you can have a great career. If you don't you'll have an average degree and start at the bottom of whatever field you are in. Same as most places.

Very true, like with UT-Knoxville. They have a world class logistics/SCM program. Auburn has a great aviation program. Vandy has a good HR program. LSU was the only PE school until the Aggies joined. I think SC is well know for their international business program, whatever that is worth.

I see your point. But at the same time, I think Alabama needs to worry about the state of affairs after Saban leaves and the program's risk of not being sustainable. Without competitive football, out of state applications will decline, you will have a higher acceptance rate, lower yield and rank. This will continue perpetuating itself as the GPA, test scores drop and you return to an Ole Miss. If anything, I say Auburn is the safest play right now. It has a prestigious sounding name without any indication of being a university from Alabama.

The best part about this is that Emory is ranked #21.
