Did we fire Cutcliffe too soon?

I think we did. I think he could've attracted 4 and 5 star QB's. I've heard that he never wanted to fire anyone and that may have been the case. Maybe BS but I think I've heard it before.

Absolutely not. His recruiting was laughably bad and he refused to make any kind of staff changes. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we have 19 or 20 starters back from the 03 team and only won 4 games?
I like Cutcliffe and he knows his shite but Xs and Os will only get you so far. Especially when you're not willing to recruit or make staffing changes that are needed

Better than Orgeron 1.0

Pete Boone was the biggest problem. Cutcliffe under a competent AD could have been a 20 year coach at Ole Miss.

Firing Cut was the right move for both parties. He reached his ceiling in Oxford and he is in the perfect place for him now.

He had 5 years to do that and all he got us was Seth Adams.
The problem was he fell ill and wasn't able to go out and recruit. Administration told him he needed to change up his coaching staff and bring in some recruiters. He refused. So the admin fired him for a recruiter.
2005-06 Ole Miss was as void of talent as we've ever been. The writing was on the wall in 2004 that we weren't capitalizing on the publicity that Eli brought us and we had to stop the bleeding.
Whenever your boss gives you a choice of his way or the highway and you pick the highway.....prepare for your boss to react accordingly. That goes for literally any job out there.

Absolutely no. His recruiting, staff hires, and results were in decline. We fired him December 2004 and he accepted a job as QB coach with Charlie Wise's Notre Dame right after and then had to resign before coaching a game due to a heart-attack and surgery. Would he have turned it around at Ole Miss in 2005? No. He had a heart attack and heart surgery AND the talent and staff were not good. No one knew he would have a heart attack at the time of course. We managed to get out of the frying pan and jumped right into the fire.

frick no. We never should have hired him at all.

His best players all happen to have the same last name. No doubt he’s a good coach of QBs but I think Eli was calling his own plays his senior year and he was throwing mediocre receivers open with an NFL arm.
I wish he would retire and move to Oxford and become a consultant so when Arch is a senior that is a selling point for us. He would be closer to family so it’s not out of the realm of possibility

I think fans get the warm and fuzzies about him because he had Eli and took us to a decent bowl game for the first time (at least in my lifetime) but he was like Nutt and didn’t think believe ole miss could compete with the big boys and he was leading us with that mindset.
I think 2 things can right at the same time: coach cut wasn’t the guy for the job long term and coach O was in over his head and was a bad hire to replace him. Coach o thought he could win big at ole miss, but couldn’t get it done. I’d rather have the guy that thinks he can win big over the guy that is happy with a 7-5 ceiling.

Lane has our kids playing like that and I really wish we could keep him forever. But I know that's asking a lot.

Timing was not based on coaching abilities. He was never gonna recruit well because he truly believed we were never gonna rise above mid-tier. The UTs and Bama’s were untouchable in his mind. He did well at Duke because it is a perfect fit for him. They have zero aspirations of ever sustainable winning.
Cut had heart issues and low energy. Cut was tired. Pete was a pain in the arse.

Some of Cut's best recruiting occurred when Bama went on probation and hired Shula. Obviously that wasn't going to last.

I saw a Cutcliffe led offense with Peyton Manning at QB get shut down by a really poorly talented Memphis team and lose the game.
I saw us go into Tuscaloosa twice and get blasted by some of the worst Alabama teams in history.
He was an awful coach.

I never liked Cut after the 2001 Music City Bowl. I have never seen a team as ill prepared to play a football game as we were that day.

Does anyone remember the roster that Coach O fielded in his first year? That, my friends, was the definition of a bare cupboard. O was a poor gameday coach. O was a weak x's and o's guy but Saban couldn't have won many games with that roster. Cutcliffe quit recruiting.
