Per Cecil’s Twitter.

NEWS: Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt has been fired for cause, according to UT sources with knowledge of the situation. His firing ends one of the worst coaching tenures in Vols history.

Kevin Steele will be named interim coach for this season after a cursory search. UT will claim it is too late in the process to hire a permanent and will promote Steele for this season according to my sauces.

Report: Tennessee to part ways with Jeremy Pruitt (GoVols247)

quote:

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that Pruitt was fired for cause following an internal investigation into football recruiting.
quote:

Additionally, athletics director Phillip Fulmer will retire, sources said, after UT hires an AD to replace him, because he wants his successor to choose the next football coach. Fulmer made the decision to step down, and his departure is not tied to the investigation.
quote:

Pruitt's contract includes more than 30 fire-for-cause provisions. Among them, he can be fired for cause if he engaged in conduct likely to result in an NCAA finding of a Level I or Level II rules violation, or if someone who reports to Pruitt engaged in conduct that constitutes a Level I or II violation or is likely to result in such a violation and the university determines Pruitt was negligent in his oversight or lacked reasonable preventative compliance measures. Additionally, he can be fired for cause for a failure to promote and maintain an atmosphere of compliance or a failure to monitor employees who report to him.

Everything is gone Fulmer. All of it. It's all been burned to the ground.

We destroyed you. We destroyed it all. Your legacy is dust. Your program ruins.

They seem pretty convinced that this will save them from the NCAA. I mean I guess it might, but "we kicked our compliance monitoring into high gear as soon as we realized this guy wasn't going to win many games and we needed to find a way to avoid paying him a buyout because we're broke" isn't much of a defense.

Question is can we hire Pruitt or is he an analyst this season...

One thing for sure is Pruitt will probably hold a grudge against TN

So they fired him for cause after an internal investigation. If the NCAA doesn't get Pruitt and UT this lawsuit might be tasty.

Anybody have any history on schools purposely doing internal investigation with the only purpose of getting out of a contract and firing a coach?

I don't see us touching him if he's legitimately being fired for recruiting violations.

Yea, I think Pruitt is going to be taking the long road back.

Tennessee hired the same attorney to handle the investigation and firing of Bruce Pearl for cause.

Yeah, I am thinking Pruitt's NCAA troubles are going to prevent Alabama from hiring him (at least as a coach), even if Saban wanted to.

@JTalty

Been trending this way for weeks. Jeremy Pruitt has told those around him this year if he gets fired, he'll just go back to Alabama and work for Saban again.

You're probably right. Saban thinks highly of Pruitt as a defensive mind so he'll give it a shot as an analyst.
May get turned away by Sankey, much like with Freeze a few years ago.

Depends on what the nature of the violations are. For all we know it was a bunch of piddly secondaries that they're using as a flimsy excuse to fire him for cause and settle out of court for a reduced dollar amount from his buyout. Or he could have pulled a Calipari and kept himself insulated enough from the shenanigans that they can accuse him of running a loose ship without ever actually pinning anything on him. I doubt Jeremy is smart enough to do that though. Odds are he's fricked, but Tennessee was also so desperate to fire him for cause that they'd have used any hint of impropriety to justify it.
