Can we stop calling LSU the defending national champions?

They are doing horrible at defending that title by losing to State and Mizzou.

Never have liked the idea of the champion defending anything. The team is so different as are the teams you're playing. LSU is last year's champion. 2020 is a completely new season.

They should stop referring to LSU as anything other than LSU because last year has ZERO bearing on this years team due to graduation, early departures of players and coaches and gaping holes in our current line up.

I don’t care what any stupid commentator says, LSU isn’t defending shite. They are the 2019 National Champions for eternity. A new championship is being played this year, if it’s even completed. If it isn’t it’s not like LSU “retains it” anymore than they will if it is.

I've always thought it was a dumb saying; this isn't boxing where you defend your belt: at the end of the season the slate is wiped clean and at the start of the next season you are are 0-0 like everyone else

These student athletes are working towards a college degree, while competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics , there is no need to put them down because of numerical scoring at the end of a certain contest.

Only way we would be defending a national championship is if we made it to the national championship this year.
LSU was the national champion in 2019. We're a decent offense with a historically bad defense in 2020.

Yep. "Defending National Champion" is a meaningless moniker. Last season's National Championship has no connection to this year's season or it's championship. LSU won it for last year's season. It's history.
