Was talking to a bammer fan at the gym about this yesterday. He said he understands how us Auburn fans feel. Gus is our Shula. He said how he was just blah every season with no hope of the BOT making a change.

Shula did have a better bowl winning percentage than Gus, but give Gus some credit.

Gus is Kevin Sumlin at A&M with an SEC title and no drinking problem.

Their winning percentages are nearly identical and Sumlin got ran outta town in 6 years.

More like RC Slocum after they joined the Big12.

One conference title, one division title where they got blown out in the championship, otherwise a lot of mediocrity with a lousy bowl record.

Similar personality as well.

ETA: and his “sure thing, slam dunk” replacement was this guy:

Gus is much closer to Mark Richt than he is Shula. But neither are even decent as comparisons. Sumlin might be the best comp but a longer tenure and higher highs.

At least Gus won the division a couple of times. Don't think Sumlin ever got higher than 3rd.

If you dropped Gus in the East with UGAs recourses, he’d look a lot like richt imo.

In 15 seasons as UGA headcoach Richt had nine 10+ win seasons.

Gus has had two 10+ win seasons in 7 years.

Richt was an excellent QB whispering coach.

David Greene (01-04): 11,528 passing yards
Matt Stafford (06-08): 7,731 passing yards
Aaron Murray (10-13): 13,166 passing yards

He just could never get over the national hump and win it all.

Gus is nowhere near Richt imo.

THe only real similarity is both coaches in the end, couldn't win the games they HAD to win to take their teams to the next level, the playoffs or championship games.

In some ways Richt was worse...

+ he coached in the state that was LOADED with top talent
+ he also got many more years to elevate his program: 15 years to Gus' so far 7+.

9-3
8-5
8-5
6-7
in the East.

12-2
10-4
9-4
8-5
8-5
8-5
7-6
in the West.

Yeah and Richt was fired after that. Enough was enough.

I think if this season is mediocre to poor you might be onto something. I think last season went just well enough to retain him outright, and even moreso when you factor in the buyout.
