Observations from Auburn v. Georgia

After watching much of Georgia-Auburn game these are some observations:


- Georgia O line absolutely mauled Auburn 's D line. The looked like they played a lot of base 3-4 because Georgia wasn't doing anything that complicated. They were just ramming it down their throat and opening giant holes for the RB.

Stetson Bennet is also quite good. He's small, but he stands in the pocket well and doesn't panic. He isn't the most accurate guy ever, but he has a decent arm and doesn't bail and run around. His O line also gave him a lot of time.


-Auburn back seven are big and athletic. Their safeties look like our LBers. They cover can cover pretty well in the red zone. But you can also get open on them. Georgia hit a couple big pass plays.


- Georgia has the best special teams in the country. From kicker to punter yo coverage and return, they pinned Auburn on a long field the whole first half. It works hand in hand as to why their defense is so good. Their offense was also on the Auburn half of the field the whole time because Auburn could never flip the field.

Auburn's D for worn down just like ours. They were on the field the whole first half.


- Auburn (Chad) play calling leaves a lot to be desired, obviously. They couldn't do much against Georgia's front at all. Their O line was getting no push. When they actually got a little rhythm going and were able to run the ball somewhat effectively (3 - 4 yds/carry), they'd get in third down and Chad would call some dumbass, low % down field pass, all while Nix was getting heated up by pressure.

It was clockwork and brought back lots of bad memories of the qb rolling out of the pocket in panic mode then just chunking the ball down field to a covered receiver.

- Auburn ran some end around stuff, but they have Shwartz who is lightning on grass. I'd bet they try to do that slot against us. They're also going to try to run him deep. He's their #1 threat on offense. He was open deep a couple times, but Nix missed him.

Overall, our defense played way, way better than Auburn did, most notably against the run. Fowler and Herbstreit kept refenceing how much of an anomoly what Georgia did against Arkansas' defense was, constantly referring to them as a terrible unit.

Auburn has a good RB and one great all purpose offensive weapon in Schwartz and a decent receiver. Nix can move, too. When they did get the goal line on offense they couldn't do anything against Georgia's speed. Those plays probably would have scored on us.

I expect their game plan against Arkansas will be to test our LBers and our ends to set the edge. They will run it up the middle and to the outside, use the qb keeper/zone read to loosen us up, then go deep. They also run the screen a good bit.

We better be ready to swarm to the ball and run a lot in the flats and spy the qb. They're going to score on us, but they're not that polished. Then again, it was against Georgia, who is going to shut down lots of offenses.
