Im not saying it won’t be a slow start, and I’m certainly not saying he doesn’t get yanked after the first possession. I just think Kirby is pretty loyal to the qb, look at the Fromm/fields debacle, especially his first game since high school and major brain surgery, and taking that hit, and the penalties, etc.

Kirby is smarter than that.
Make all the excuses you want but the offense as a whole ran better under Bennett and became the same efficient offense we are used to.

Dude came in and saved the day. You reward him by giving him the start, even if it's for only 1 or 2 drives.

That all can also turn into a nightmare for all.

Sigh smh....I feel like he shouldn't in this game. Maybe against vandy or someone like that

Yes, but so far, and even the last half of last season, the running game has been bad. The OL looked terrible last week against a very untalented team.

Alot of that was busted assignments. Tha5s why we looked better second half.

Game is in Athens, where young Dawgs play better. He'll have seen action and contact. He'll know the staff has faith in him. If he gets it together, he looks like excellent long-term option for this squad.
. . . and most importantly the line seems to have cleaned up a lot of the BS that plagued the offense in the first half.
Not saying I agree with him starting, but there is a lot of sense in playing Mathis a good bit.

Kirby was really quick to defend him in his press conferences and he isn't wrong. A lot of what went wrong wasn't on Mathis.
True, but then you also have to look at the obvious. He missed a WR on a slant by 10 yards in the redzone for an interception. Never set his feet on the play and it was just an awful throw. I noticed Mathis defaults to his feet much faster than he should instead of progressing thru a route tree. He's got great feet but without the threat of passing he's a sitting duck. He needs to set his feet first and foremost if he's going to sling it around.
Overall, he was an F. He played poorly but there was some things to like that he showed during the game but you also have to remember - Arkansas is the worst defense he will see.

It was a spot route and it was on Burton more so than Mathis.

Bennett's stat lines even when he started at the other college - he threw a lot of interceptions and was a bit turnover prone. He's been on the field enough to know what you get with him. He's a guy with a little bit of escapabilty and can throw good enough to win in the SEC. With that said, his history says he's probably going to make some silly throws at times and get us in trouble but I agree, he can win under center. He's good enough and can do everything we need him to do.

Not sure Mathis is more escapable than bennett. The scout team wanted him back because of the way he dealt with them and succeeded.
Would not read much into community college as you don't know the situation in was in that season.

Ok fine, both freshman screwed this one up. But lets not forget Fitzpatrick was wide open on the same play.
Other very bad mistakes
Running out of bounds instead of getting the first down. Not undestanding on 3rd down to go the sticks when the defender wasn't close to him. He had the first and stepped out a yard early.
More mistakes - Completely missing a hike that hit his hands. Looked unfocused at times. I know Hill had some rough hikes but this one was on him.
He also took a sack on 3rd down.
The play calling didn't help him. We should have tried to get the running game going and put him in more manageable situations because he was in 3rd and long on a bunch of his drives but with that said - He did play poorly.
Im all for giving him another shot because he did look better on his last two drives and seemed to be settled in.

It's probably close - both have great legs. Bennett has the edge for me because he's proven he can make things happen and not get overwhelmed. Mathis has yet to prove that.

That's just not what happened.

I may have exaggerated the 10 yards but the throw wasn't even close.

The gif is here, How anyone can't put the blame on Mathis for this terrible throw is beyond me.
And Fitzpatrick was wide open down the middle. Instead he made a poor throw to the outside.

It's only beyond you because you haven't paid as much attention as some.

to be fair, they really only score in the 1st qtr, 1st half against us
Nobody is being fair with The team as a whole with our offenses first half.
We are already being counted out. I would say our defense is going to give a lot more trouble to opposing teams than Kentucky or ole miss defenses. I didn’t watch Auburn’s whole game but my friends who are auburn fans were bitching the whole time about Nix. Florida has been crowned east champion already due to their performance against ole miss? And our shitty first half of offense...
To be fair to Mathis Kirby is right. His good plays got called back by penalties. I’m not counting Mathis out and I’m not uncomfortable starting Bennett either.
I’ll also add to this that I am almost always wrong about everything I predict.

Because it was a spot route and he threw it to where Burton was supposed to settle in at.

Can't argue that one.

Bennett has been a Dawg his entire life. That devotion isn't as important as his good production but it has to count for something.
