This.

A system that produces 8 win, 4 loss seasons might be considered successful at Miss St. while being deemed a complete failure at Alabama.

You have to define "will work".

Just popping in to say that there are only a few State fans proclaiming its National Championship time in Starkville.

Most of us are reasonable and cautiously optimistic. The poster that referenced Bobby P. at Ark is spot on for me. Regular season (12 games) of 9 wins +- a game or two depending on talent/schedule would be great. Will allow us to up our talent profile in the long run.

I just hope Arnett keeps our D up. I was impressed with the scheme and tackling Saturday given the offseason we had.

Against a completely depleted secondary that found out their shutdown CB was out the night before the game? Obviously a great win but put things in perspective.

I think we are. If you have 4 turnovers and still win by double digits on the road, you are on the right path to success. I think most State fans have been fairly level headed after the win. We aren't predicting wins against Bama and Georgia, but I think most of us now give us a legitimate chance to win the games that we're previously pegged as tossups or probable losses (Kentucky, Texas A&M, Auburn).

There's no bigger fan of Mike Leach than me ... I'm a fan of the man, not the team he's coaching ... but chillax.

I think his offense will work fine in the SEC in that odds are he's going to have a consistently competitive team. If he wins 8, 9, 10 games a year regularly, he can probably retire from State.

There also are going to be times when it's simply not going to be his day and his offense ... just like any other offense in the conference when it ain't their day, from Alabama's down to Vanderbilt's ... is going to suck eggs.

I don't think it's fair to completely dismiss what happened Saturday as an aberration against a depleted team. I also don't think folks in Starkville should be measuring a slot for the national championship trophy just yet.

I am just glad the guy is in the conference, anywhere, because he is a national treasure. Do your homework, read his book, research the guy and you will find out that the flakiness is a facade for a tough, hard-nosed, take no prisoners football coach and a very wise and perceptive man.

Just doing the math here....

36 is the number of completions and 60 is the number of passes.

Evans- 8 times

Ward- 9 times

Flott- 7 times

Ricks- 5 times

That's only 29 times those guys were targeted He completed 36 attempts out of 60.

Anybody else see the issue here?

Not to mention Peterson figured this out immediately. There are smarter DCs in the the SEC than what’s currently at LSU.

Any comparison to any other team not named MSU with Leach coaching it is laughable.

If you don't understand that and why.... prepare for heart ache.

People keep bringing his losses...

Yep... any one of his losses could be changed easily... just have a decent defense with some NFL talent on the roster...

Well then... lets give him one of those..

His offenses always worked... always.. His problem was getting enough defensive talent to field a decent team.

Wake up... there is a new sheriff in town and he is a PIRATE!

Obviously won't win every game in the SEC, may even lose when suppose to win, BUT he gonna win many most didn't think he would. Nobody is really safe at any time. Look closely at his resume. If you don't think this man isn't capable of pulling off big upsets and scoring a lot of points, even when down by huge amounts, you're in for a big suprise.

I actually agree with the state guys. Will they win a league title? Probably not. Is it a good equalizer? Yes. They'll definitely be competitive, and QB recruits will jump on board. Who wouldn't? Leach is a good coach, and Tennessee will regret not hiring the guy years ago.

Corners don't usually guard running backs, so I imagine Hill's receptions are not counted as a reception for against any corner.

It didn’t hurt bringing in your own quarterback.

And Mullen was there for the taking for years. Tennessee, LSU, and a few others have passed on some good HCs. Plenty of programs that refuse to believe what they see.

Those are not receptions. Those were the "targeted" times.

You guys will eventually get it... understand it.

I’ll wait till the other teams get up to speed. One of the largest strengths of that offense, this year particularly, is the simplicity of it. Doesn’t need as many reps to get it going. If it works as well at week 5 then I’ll be surprised.

It does look like it’ll be a good offense, though. Not that anyone thought otherwise.

CBs were gassed by the 4th quarter due to lack of depth, Ward barely tried on their last TD. A lot of that is on the offense not doing anything in the first half but you have to also credit MSU for converting 3rd downs so often
quote:

With Stingley Jr. out, and apparently Raydar still not good enough to play, we only were able to get 4 guys on the field here in Ricks, Flott, Ward and D. Evans. It shouldn't surprise anyone Evans posted the worst grade in the group at 33.3 overall in 28 snaps. In 20 coverage snaps he was targeted (picked on) 8 times and gave up 5 completions for 113 yards and a TD, no pass breakups. Ward was next up and probably shouldnt have even played due to not being 100% but posted a 53.7 overall grade and in 45 coverage snaps was targeted 9 times and allowed 5 completions for 135 yards and 1 TD but did have 2 pass breakups. Flott was on the field for an exhausting 76 snaps and in 61 coverage plays ws targeted 7 times, allowing 5 completions for 89 yards and a TD with 1 pass broken up. Flott, Ward and Evans all missed 1 tackle in the game.

Having been on the wrong side of Leach from the earliest days of his Stoops OU squad to his run at Tech, I have made the following conclusions.

1) He immediately raises the ceiling for a program's best years.

2) He doesn't need elite talent to win.

2) He has never fielded a decent defense in all his years

3) He can vanish and let you down when you least expect it. My brother is a Tech grad. He watched his Red Raiders knock off #1 Texas and #8 Oklahoma State and climb to #2 in the rankings only to lose 65-21 to Oklahoma and get thumped by an average Ole Miss squad in the Cotton Bowl. Jevan Snead went off that day.

4) His funny, hokey media presence masks a pretty grating and harsh approach to team management. He has never been able to attract and groom elite talent and usually pisses off one or two key players.

From a dog fan, my litmus for success is 7-9 wins with an occasional(every3-4yrs) 10+ win season and run at a west title.

I think that is manageable and realistic.

I think that is possible

And that is where the record gets tricky. Mike Leach has never won or even played for a conference title in all his years of coaching.
