It's pretty common for players to wear a generic jersey for photo shoots. Easier than making 150 jerseys in July. They will Photoshop in the actual numbers.
Some teams, Troy used to, take team profile pics in a jersey with no number.
ETA: I just read the rule, I am super wrong. Can't say that I will like a "0" running around on a football field. Seems pretty weird... Also, why allow 2 sets of duplicate numbers? Why not just do away with it altogether?

I would say you're right except the NCAA just announced that players can wear number 0 beginning this year, and this is from an Auburn beatwriter

Yeah pretty sure the NCAA changed the jersey rule to where only two players to have the same number (I think it was virtually unlimited before they just couldn’t be on the field at the same time). Because of that they are allowing 0.

Duke Williams and Monty Adams (both #1) were in on USC's last play of the game in 2014. Thankfully the refs didn't catch it.

Also: That's Zakoby McClain wearing No. 9, which has been Jamien Sherwood's number. So it appears there may be some more number changes on top of Owen Pappoe switching to No. 0. Auburn hasn't updated its roster since the end of the 2019 season
