The Clemson University Board of Trustees voted to remove John C. Calhoun’s name from its honors college because of a petition signed by nearly 20,000 — including NFL stars Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins — that circulated earlier this week, the Greenville News reported.
The former Clemson players retweeted a petition started by Clemson student Roann Abdeladl that demanded the removal of former U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun’s name from the Calhoun Honors College. It was rebranded as The Clemson University Honors College, per the News.
Calhoun served as the country’s seventh vice president, from 1825-1932, first under John Quincy Adams and then continuing under Andrew Jackson. He had also represented South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Calhoun was a slave owner and secessionist, and the college was named after him because his plantation became Clemson University.
“Slavery is indispensable to a republican government,” Calhoun is quoted as saying.
The petition noted Calhoun advocating for the expansion of slavery as a “positive good” on the U.S. senate floor and it said he “exemplifies institutional racism and white supremacy.”
Hopkins, now with the Arizona Cardinals, explained on Instagram that he doesn’t acknowledge Clemson during pregame introductions on NFL broadcasts because it associates itself with Calhoun.
Tillman Hall, the school's most famous building, will also undergo a name change.
Tillman Hall was named after Benjamin Tillman, a racist former Governor of South Carolina who openly mocked black people and defended lynching.
Tillman Hall will be officially changed to Main Building, but will likely go by its former nickname, Old Main.
ETA: Carolina_Girl pointed out that the Calhoun name change is effective immediately, whereas a resolution for Tillman was approved but must still be ratified.

How often did DeAndre Hopkins go anywhere near the Honors College?

Not surprised on Tillman at all - don't care what his history with Clemson is, he's toxic. I'm a little shocked it lasted this long.
Much more surprised about Calhoun.
Much more surprised about Calhoun.

Cowardly horseshite. The damn school sits on Calhoun's old Fort Hill Estate. Tell Watson and Hopkins to put their money where their virtue-signaling mouths are and pay to move the whole damn campus if Calhoun is that offensive.

You should be. Clemson, with the help of Herbstreit and an unwitting ESPN are pulling a fast one.
They didn't do jack shite about the real racist, Tillman. They just kicked the can to the SC Legislature who they know won't do anything.
The Clemson Board of Trustees had all the authority in the world to rename Tillman Hall today. They didn't. Shame on their racist souls.

An amazing development.
Clemson gets called out for being racist/adapts and a Carolina fan somehow jumps in and says "hold my beer!"

Please define racism. Who invented this word? Which group is the most racist? Is it the group that commits 85% of all interracial violence, or the one that, combined with Latinos, only commits 15% of all interracial violence, despite still being the great majority of the nation?
Which group, according to the SPLC, has the largest percentage of people in hate groups? Which group votes their racial interests election after election? Which group still practices slavery?
Some of you need to turn off the ESPN and the ball game and do some reading. Or just observe behavior, and then tell us who the biggest racists are.

First- As a Clemson fan, I’m glad those names were (or soon will be) removed from Clemson University.
Second- You SEC Rant purists always grouse about Clemson fans invading your site, yet you start threads about Clemson happenings with regularity as if our school is part of the SEC. Shouldn’t this thread be moved to the More Sports forum? Asking for a friend.

Not really. The people currently teaching hate are the toxic ones

Why? You think it stops there? Surprised? You knew it would not and won't stop there. Congrats

Why anyone would get upset about the name of a building is beyond me. In 5 years no one will give two shits that the name was changed. The fact that we ever named these buildings and military establishments after confederate generals and known racists is stupid as hell. Could you imagine a library on a university campus named after Adolph Hitler? It's pretty much the same thing. From what I've read, Calhoun pretty much stole the land that is now Clemson University. Get ready for this to sweep across the country at every street corner, park etc. The carving on Stone Mountain will be gone within three years. The Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial will all be changed as well. After all, Washington only freed his slaves after his death.

Tillman openly defended lynching - going as far to say that he had helped kill blacks.
He's on a whole different level from run of the mill individuals of the 1800s who were slave owners and/or defenders of the system.

So the article is lying?
It explicitly says they did.

Nothing will be changed about Tillman until it goes thru the political cycle in Columbia.

Got ya - that makes more sense then

Considering the very institutions wouldn't exist without these "racists", it is pretty clear why buildings are named after them.

And congratulations on destroying things because you don't like who they honor or celebrate. Y'all are more dangerous to monuments than ISIS or the Taliban. Did you cheer when they destroy monuments over there? Congrats on promoting cultural fascism.

But the Germans did NOT build a monument to Hitler did they? So that should inform your opinion of Southerners AND Northerners who built CSA monuments post war.
Got news for you, Abe Lincoln was a "racist," at least in the sense that he definitely did not believe they were equal to Whites. Read his highly uncovered words from the Lincoln Douglas debate. Good luck finding any founding father who believed in racial equality.
Stop practicing presentism. THAT is the intellectual scourge that will lead to all monuments of Whites being taken down. Of course, the ones honoring the homophobic and rape celebrating Dr. King will remain. The statues of the Pharoahs will remain too.
