During his weekly appearance on Birmingham-based WJOX 94.5 FM radio program “The Roundtable,” Finebaum shared his thoughts on Tennessee’s recent success and noted that the best sign that Pruitt’s program is on the rise comes from all the other rivals calling out the Vols.

“He’s getting players that Tennessee has not gotten in a long time so he’s learned from others, especially his old boss in Tuscaloosa,” Finebaum said on the show. “I think he feels and senses the momentum, so he’s playing to it and no matter how you slice it, Jeremy Pruitt’s recruiting has been the story of this spring. And the reason why I’m convinced that Tennessee is on the cusp of returning to power is I am hearing criticism from other schools, competing schools – from rivals, that he’s not doing that great.

“I haven’t heard anybody mentioned Tennessee recruiting in so long, I mean you have to go back almost to me outside of a brief moment with Butch Jones and Lane Kiffin for about 20 minutes, you have to go back to the heyday of Phil Fulmer. It is amazing — the perception out there right now. There’s nothing going on so if you create a perception, it is going to carry you and I think they’re building off of it.”

“I’m not really that surprised when you know Jeremy Pruitt, and all of us on this program know him,” Finebaum added. “He’s always been a really good recruiter — he may be even a better evaluator, I mean he is in the Nick Saban class, in terms of Nick Saban protegees, I think he may be the best evaluator. And that really makes a big difference in recruiting and Tennessee fans have been hungry and thirsty, and they’ve had a voracious attitude appetite for a long time and I think they’re finally getting a return.”

maybe so. Saban won't coach much longer and Pruitt would be the first choice at UA if he can turn it around at UT

I wish they’d come back. A1abama getting a rent a win and the East being weak is boring.

You guys are getting all hype because of this #2 recruiting ranking in May. Your average score on those 18 commits is an 88. You just have a bunch of commits. A1abama has 4 commits. LSU has 9.

The classes will fill and Tennessee will slide out of the top 5 but stay top 15-10ish

Try not losing to Georgia State and BYU and we’ll take you seriously.

Ed lost to Troy. Saban lost to UL Monroe. shite happens. Since those games we have done nothing but improve.

We will finish top 5 recruiting. The slaw will be culled. Bookmark

I hope TENN gets back, good for the SEC East and good for the league as a whole. Right now, Alabama, Auburn and LSU have all demonstrated during the Saban tenure at Bama, they can win SEC titles and NC. Florida and UGA have won SEC titles, Florida NC's UGA not yet. TENN being that 3rd team in the East would bring back 3 to 3 balance in both divisions.

Yep, most coaches have a WTF loss in their first couple of seasons.

I’m not sure Troy is in the same class as Georgia State or ULM, though. We struggled with them in prior seasons — we made an incredible 2nd half comeback against them just a few seasons before. They seem to match up well with us for whatever reason.

Thank you! Tennessee’s class right now is comparable to a good Mizzou class, it has just been put together extra quickly.

You don’t get bonus points for a class coming together early. In February it’ll still be a good Mizzou type of class

I would be shocked if you did! Looking at the numbers you are at a 89% composite average with 19 recruits. Top 5 is gonna be tough

Based on what they have now and Pruitt’s recent recruiting I’ll guess they finish around 7 or 8.

It’ll be a good class for sure, but definitely not top 3 in the SEC.

What?

Having the number #1 class in May is "success?"

Richt always got off to a hot start in recruiting and almost inevitably finished with a wimper in February especially the 2nd half of his career.

Finebaum is a “showman”, not a football expert. Tenner has picked up a few early recruits, and may end up with a good class, but it’s May and things change with 18-year-olds, and recruiting classes.

No.

UT's best hope is to be on its way to being able to consistently make bowl games.

It's not just gonna be a "go to sleep with a team that lost to BYU and went winless in the conference and wake up with a national championship team" type thing.

LSU spent close to a decade living in Bama's shadow but seemingly never being close enough, but in recent years they seemed like more and more of a threat.
People act like they completely sucked in 2018 - they didn't. They looked like a team that could win a championship if they held steady and improved going into next season, which is exactly what happened.

So, no. Tenn isn't anywhere close to being "back to power". They have to sustain "back to not sucking" first.

Tennessee wins a bunch of games at the end of the season because they play a bunch of easy teams. Everyone gets hyped up for the next season, they play the hard part of their schedule, got like 2-3 or 2-4, then win out on the easy part of the schedule.

Pulled in some recruits? Well that's not new either. These recruits won't be the first ones to ruin their careers by committing to Tennessee.

It's been rinse and repeat for the past 10 years.

Except next year they have their schedule more spread out, so at the end of the year rather than win streak, reality sticks around.

Snore...

Y’all been wanting to be back near the top for so long, you’re starting to sound like you’re begging for attention. Beat the big boys with some level of consistency first- then talk hillbilly.
