Working for yourself requires a lot of discipline and ability to take risks that most are unwilling to take. If you're an idea type personality that jumps around every few years, you may have trouble translating that into a successful business venture.

I think that's the biggest rub every time this topic comes up. I have a bunch of friends in plants, and they all miss a ton of family time and never glamorize shift work. It's a great career opportunity but to act like working even 500 hours of OT is normal is just out of touch with reality.
