quote:

“He called me one time when he was at Alabama to ask me to talk to a kid who was a baseball-football guy ... I’ve got a lot of respect for him as a coach, he's a great coach, but I don’t think we’re going to have beers anytime soon,” Mauck said. “He never really looked at me ... it kind of surprised him that I ever started at LSU. He never thought I was …. he thought I was a safety.
“When I got hurt in 2002, I wasn’t supposed to know this, but coach Saban wasn’t all that mad. He (liked) Marcus Randall. He was a good, good buddy of mine. For guys who competed against each other, we were buddies. When I got hurt, there was a lot of people, he wanted Marcus to be the guy.”

quote:

"I was the starting quarterback and I walked by him like ,'Hey Coach’ and he (acted) like I wasn’t even there,” Mauck said. “Infuriating at times or I'm sure if you're coaching with him."

quote:

Moments after winning the national championship during that memorable 2003 campaign, Mauck said that Saban looked over to him and star wideout Michael Clayton in the locker room and was immediately focused on the following season.
"He looks at me and goes, 'Are you guys coming back next year?' Just like that," Mauck said. "He didn't say anything about the game."

Does it seem like Saban has mellowed out and become more of a player's coach or still the same guy?

BREAKING - Saban barely celebrates whenever his teams win a title.

Mauck sounds like he got his feelings hurt. Toughen up.

Sounds to me like Saban didn't like Mauck that much.

Saban still speaks highly of Rohan Davey.

Yeah, its pretty common knowledge that the 2011 tornadoes changed him a good bit.

But also, he is an alpha, and Mauck sounds like a little beta bitch right here.

That just sounds incredibly whiny. Mauck doesn't come anywhere near a national title without Saban and that defense. Was he expecting Saban to coddle him and make him feel special? Saban wasn't exactly nice to AJ McCarron either but they learned to coexist in order to win 2 national titles.

Saban only looked at refs in the eye.

He is the best coach of all time.....yes, eclipsing the Bear.

He won mauck a championship.

Marcus Randal was not better than Matt.

Saban grew as a leader from then till now.

Sabans losses to Auburn while at LSU were barely excusable.

Saban would have won at West Va or USC or Texas. But he did it in the sec with crushing defenses.

I wonder if it ever occured to Mauck that being dismissed like that didn't stoke the competitive fires a little bit. The really good coaches do everything for a reason. I have heard stories from observers about Saban being dismissive of one player, publicly chewing out another while treating yet another player with kid gloves and all players are on the same team at the same time. Ryan Clark I think has a couple good stories out there.

To me, that sounds like Saban knows how to motivate people. Hearing that Saban preferred Randall and/or acting like Saban didn't give a **** about him might have been the difference between National Champ Matt Mauck who played in the NFL and rush off to grad school Matt Mauck.

Not a flame- just speaking honestly after decades of observing human psychology, leadership styles etc. I watched that interview Tuesday night and watched it and discussed it with my family- the type of people who you will encounter in your lifetime.

Nick Saban is a classic narcissist. He’s a living breathing narcissistic checklist. Other people essentially exist to glorify Nick Saban. If they fulfill that role, they have succeeded. If not, they have failed. That’s it. People are tools for Nick Saban. When Nick Saban thought Matt Mauck could benefit him, he had no hesitation in calling him. But otherwise he has no use for him . Everybody in Saban’s circle understands this - it’s part of the deal. A high percentage of our leadership is exactly the same- we all know guys like this. They have the ability to be single-minded and achieve large goals, which is Saban in a nutshell. He is personal discipline and consistency personified, to a degree that amazes us mere mortals.

A narcissist does not “ mellow out “- he just learns that it’s in HIS best interest to fake normal constructive emotions and relationships. He can turn it on or off as needed when it’s in his best interest. But the goal always remains solely unapologetically self interest. People on their own terms really don’t interest Saban. He’s not a counselor or a healer- he’s not interested in your life outside of his goals. He’s not going to ever “ take one for the team” or allow himself to be vulnerable in any way.

I'd say he mellowed out. I believe he's consistently cited two events in the last 10 years that changed him from a personality standpoint: the aftermath of the 2011 tornado and his first grandchild being born.

On the bright side, nobody can ever accuse Saban of being racist when it comes to quarterbacks. #Aheadofhistime

Water is wet

Saban is an elite coach

Saban is also kind of a prick

Bama fans have no issue accepting the first two points, but get really testy when you bring up the third.

At the time, LSU needed someone like that to whip the program into shape and get out of the mindset that mediocrity is ok. Many of those guys like Trev Faulk appreciated Saban's approach much later in retrospect

Matt Mauck should know not to say anything unflattering about Nick the Dick. He'll be getting death threats from gumps any day now.
