Sources: Charlie Strong joins Nick Saban's staff at Alabama (ESPN)
quote:

Charlie Strong is the latest former head coach to join Nick Saban at Alabama.

Strong, who has had head-coaching stops at Louisville, Texas and South Florida, has agreed to a deal to become a defensive analyst at Alabama under Saban, sources told ESPN. Several other SEC schools had expressed interest in hiring Strong in a coordinator and/or analyst role since his ouster at South Florida following the 2019 season.

Florida coach Dan Mullen had also talked with Strong about filling a defensive analyst's role. Strong was the defensive coordinator at Florida under Urban Meyer when the Gators won national championships in 2006 and 2008.

Strong, 59, visited with Saban last week on Alabama's campus. The hiring of Strong continues a trend for Saban at Alabama of bringing in former head coaches either in assistant roles or analyst roles. Among them: Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, Mike Locksley, Mike Stoops, Kyle Flood, Major Applewhite and Butch Jones. Sarkisian is currently the Tide's offensive coordinator.

Strong most recently was the head coach at South Florida, where he went 21-16 in three seasons. He was fired after the Bulls went 4-8 this past season. Previously, he was at Texas and was fired after going 16-21 in three seasons. Strong's first head-coaching job was at Louisville, where he led the Cardinals to a 37-15 record in four seasons. He won at least 11 games each of his last two seasons at Louisville, including a win over Florida in the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2012 season.

Strong began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Florida in 1983 and has worked for some of the biggest names in college football. He adds Saban to a list that already includes Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier and Meyer.

Since you, and others, think that Golding is straight up arse, what am I to make of you guys giving Strong a pass on his last several defenses being really bad-much worse than 2019 Bama's defense could ever dream of being? No, he wasn't the DC, but as a defensive minded head coach, how could his teams' defenses be so shitty?

And I'll state again, I love that Strong is being brought on as an analyst. I am just trying to understand the hard stance you guys are taking on this.

Thanks.

Oh, you're so cool calling people stans. What a fresh and hip thing you've copied.

Let me know when I'm supposed to start melting. Surely it's any day now right?

I think the bigger question is: Why hasn't anyone offered him a job as a DC or anything better than an analyst already.

Is Saban aware of this? Because it seems like Saban doesn't really think the same things many of you do.

After the Auburn loss...
After early signing day...
After the bowl game...
After national signing day...
When Charlie Strong gets hired...

I'm starting to think that maybe you guys don't have a fricking clue what you are talking about.

I'm going full bammer on this one. FAHR Golding and promote Strong to defensive head coach while saban becomes the commish.

To seriously answer your question though, I don't think golding is straight trash and I'm more so excited about strongs defensive philosophy. Yea he sucked at his last two stops but I think hes still a great football mind.

Do you think if maybe he had the same caliber players at USF that he had coached at Florida, the results possibly could've been better?

Dont know how true it is but I read somewhere else that strong was heavily handicapped while at Texas due to boosters wanting him to be a puppet and he bucked the system.

Whether or not he replaces golding still remains to be seen but there are quite a few rumors that there is about to be a staff realignment. Which means nothing because rumors are nothing but hot air honestly.

Saban must see something in him for him to hire him though. I could be completely wrong on this but I think we are seeing another shift in sabans philosophy, just like a few years ago when we got leaner and more athletic d lineman and when we brought Kiffin in to revamp the offense. Once again this is only my opinion and it isnt worth much of anything.

You sure? Everything I've thought would happened has happened.

Everything you and some others thought has been wrong.

Maybe Saban is reading this thread and following my advice/thoughts. He sure as shite ain't following yours though.

Surge, ask around and see if there’s any truth to the rumor, that Goulding’s headset won’t be functional this season. He’ll wear them anyway, but Strong will be calling the plays from the press box. TIA

This is a great thread. The hip hop message board I use to go to years ago had a hall of fame where the best threads would get archived for posterity. I wish this site had that.
