Woodson, but yes Peyton in retrospect of what it became after him has to be the greatest football player ever.

Why don’t you post the finalist and their stats to help make this decision...

Nope.
Funny how UT finally got over the hump as soon as he left.

Not beating Florida and that interception is what screwed him, but yeah, he got f’d on that one!

Peyton in college was about like anyone else in college. If his name were Josh Bunting or Clyde Smith, he wouldn't have finished 2nd.

Lmao what in the world?

3800 yards 36 touchdowns in the SEC in 1997 is like throwing for 5000 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2019

Charles Woodson is a legit NFL HOF'er. Like someone said, both were excellent players, but Woodson had his big Heisman moment (maybe among several of them) when he returned that punt for a TD against Ohio State in late November.

Meanwhile, Peytie Pie never beat Florida.

I thought the Heisman went to the right player.

How many times did Charles Woodson beat Florida? Danny Weurffel, Reidel Anthony, and Ike Hilliard would have made Woodson look silly.

(I know they left after 1996, but Peyton was slammed for having never beaten them)

Because Charles Woodson was a complete draft bust, amirite?

1x Super Bowl champion (XLV)
9× Pro Bowl (1998–2001, 2008–2011, 2015)
4× First-team All-Pro (1999, 2001, 2009, 2011)
4× Second-team All-Pro (2000, 2008, 2010, 2015)
NFL Defensive Player of the Year (2009)
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year (1998)
2× NFL interceptions leader (2009, 2011)
NFL 2000s All-Decade Team

Both Woodson and Manning are locks for Canton.

7 picks returned for a total of 7 yards (none of which was returned for touchdowns), 231 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Those numbers are not nearly impressive enough for a defensive player to win the Heisman.

The Big 10 bias was alive and well in 1997 if a punt return and Heisman pose against tOSU makes you the best player in CFB.

Eric Berry, Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu all had far more impressive seasons than Woodson in 97 and did not come close to winning the heisman

Totally Peyton’s fault VOLS gave up 62, 35, and 33 points to Florida from 95 to 97.

VOLS defense held Gators to 17 points in ‘98 and they finally won despite a pretty pedestrian performance by Tee Martin.

I remember thinking Peyton should have won but there were a few things going against him:

(1) Woodson played both ways and special teams so he was putting up all kinds of highlights and was a chance to have a defensive player win the heisman

(2) Michigan was in the title hunt

(3) Wuerffel won it the previous year, Wuerffel had also always beaten Tenn while Peyton never beat Florida which hurt him

Champ Bailey had better numbers the next year and wasn't even considered. It was a big ole screw job.

NO! Stovall losing out to Terry Baker has that honor.

Champ was a legit two way player. He played about 25-30% of the offensive snaps.

Woodson caught like 10 passes in the last month of the season and all of the sudden he was a “two way player”.

But I will admit Woodson turned out to be a legit NFL stud. I can’t argue with his nfl career.

Peyton should have won it, I think they just wanted to give it to a defensive player. Not to disparage how good Woodson was, he was obviously great. But if Honey Badger's 2011 season doesnt get you a Heisman over RG3 then Woodson's season shouldnt have gotten him one over Peyton.

Although it is funny to bring up Manning winless against Florida and Memphis' only win against Tennessee in history came against Peyton as well.
