Yes, he didn't win because of an ESPN campaign based on their hatred of UT.

There is a reason they have extra security when GameDay comes to Knoxville.

Chris Fowler is terrified of coming there.

The "best" player does not lose to his hated rival for his entire career. Burrow beat Alabama in their house when he got the chance.

Also, Peyton is not the GOAT in the NFL; Rice, Brady and Brees says hello.

Here is what won Hourning the heisman...59 of 111 passes for 917 yards, 3 tds and 13 interceptions...yep...he had over 4 times as many ints as he had tds.

He didnt just play QB though, you're conveniently excluding everything else he did. If you wanna say ND bias got him the Heisman on a losing team, then yeah I won't argue but don't misrepresent things to bolster your argument

OK...instead of typing it...let me pull the stats from the Sports-Reference.com 1956 Heisman Trophy Voting site...

quote:

1 Paul Hornung Notre Dame SR QB 197 162 151 1066 59 Cmp, 111 Att, 917 Yds, 3 TD, 13 Int

Those are the ONLY stats that they list...so I wasn't cherry-picking...they were.

Now...looking at his overall numbers for '56 and compare his numbers to Majors...

Hornung ran for 6 TDs and threw for 3 (total of 9 tds)
Majors ran for 7 TDs and threw for 5 (total of 12 tds)

Hornung ran for 420 yards and threw for 917 (for a total of 1,337 yards)
Majors ran for 549 and threw for 552 (for a total of 1,101 yards)

Hornung averaged 4.5 yards per carry
Majors averaged 5.1 yards per carry

Hornung averaged 8.3 yards per passing attempt
Majors averaged 9.4 yards per passing attempt

Hornung's passer rating was 108
Major's passer rating was 157

Here is the big one...

Hornung led his team to a 2-8 finish
Majors led his team to a 10-0 finish

Ok...what stats did I miss here?

He was also a kicker, returner, and safety. Theres a reason he has an award for most versatile player named after him.

Maybe if Hornung had been better at the other positionsthey would have won more than 2 games.

Btw...Majors also was punter, returner and played defensive back.

As a punter...UT beat #2 Georgia Tech because Johnny Majors did a quick kick on 1st and 10 at their own 19. The 69 yard quick kick move the ball to the Georgia Tech 12. UT's defense was able to preserve a 6-0 victory.

Majors was also the punt/kick returner (averaging 8.6 yards per punt return and 22.5 yards per kick return in '56. That season, he also punted 26 times averaging 43.0 yards per punt. On defense, he didn't have any interceptions as a Senior...but had 1 each his Sophomore and Junior seasons.

Yes, there is...it is because he played at Notre Dame.

Manning ended the losing streak to Bama (who historically was a much bigger rival to UT at the time). Prior to Manning's Sophomore season, UT hadn't beaten Bama in 10 years. He barely lost to them as a Freshman...then he started a 7-year winning streak over the Tide.
