HUNH didn't really blow up until they changed the clock rules in 2008. Spread concepts have definitely been around for 20 years, Air Raid offense developed by Hal Mumme and Mike Leach made it to Kentucky and it took off from there, with Leach taking it to OU.
I'd say that OU is the first big time program to run the spread Air Raid concepts. But the scoring really took off across CFB when they changed the clock rules.

Defense still wins championships. It doesn’t matter how many points you score if you can’t keep your opponent from scoring.

Well luckily it wont take a great defense to stop Auburns offense so that wont be a concern in that game.
That’s cool and all, but we’re talking about LSU. Let’s try and stay on topic.

Kliff Kingsbury agrees with you OP

Might do it this year? Never say never! You gonna be worry about LSU now?

It's not the defensive mindset that's changed. Coaches need to put their arrogance aside and coach smart.
I offer you 3rd and 17 from last night's game as an example.
2:32 left in a one score game and whorn had been moving the ball well on offense. What does Orlando do? He brings yet another ineffective house blitz, that hadn't worked all night, and leaves his secondary exposed in man coverage against baller WRs despite them not covering well all night long. That's arrogance.

Clock rules, blocking rules (cut blocking is still somehow legal in CFB), pass interference rules, and removal of contact from the game all favor the offense.
Yup, and it's been moving in that direction since Teddy Roosevelt stepped in to save the game. The end game will be a version of flag football, how close we get there in our lifetimes is TBD.
OP pretty much nailed it.

I'm not a fan of the current state of the game, trust me. The fullback has just about disappeared from football at every level. That speaks volumes in and of itself.

Rules changes in football over the past 10 years have completely changed the game. You simply can't play defense like you could 10-15 years ago. Therefore, teams are going to score, and score a lot more.
Alabama had great personnel on defense last year and had a great defense, but that still didn't keep Georgia and Clemson from scoring a lot of points on them.
High powered offenses are going to get their points. You simply have to have a defense that can get a few key stops during the game in order to win big games.

As fans with little if any real financial investment nor long term vested interest, 80's-90's/early 2000's football is probably the "sweet spot" for most of us.
Those with a vested interest in the long term success of the game are held to a different standard. Is what it is & the next generation will look @ us like dinosaurs.
Spent last week on a prominent football power campus & noticed a few things... No one smokes cigs/ton of kids vape, they couldn't care less about CFB/NBA rules the roost & that's only if their Xbox broke & lastly 90% of the music is electronic or synthesized by an individual artist vs group that rarely if ever tours or releases more than a few tracks @ a time.

Yep. Music has been going to shite for the last 20 years or so across all formats, for the most part. Attribute that to an ever increasing lack of a span of attention in society, but that's another ball of wax entirely.

Winning teams need defenses that are capable of producing turnovers more than dominating offenses. Alabama ran up heavy yardage on Clemson in the NC but were blown out due to turnovers and red zone 4th down defensive stops (including against fake FG trick plays).

There were exactly 6 college fullbacks drafted into the NFL last year. It's been a dying position for a while. Pro teams carried two of them 15 years ago, college teams 3-4.

Shitting the bed in the red zone and the pick six were keys to that game.

I laughed a few years ago when my son said music will eventually become synthetic for all practical purposes, starting to realize it's a matter of time before he's right.
Human relations, communication, short attention spans.. no worries as we'll initially "partner" with robots & eventually be outnumbered by robots 10 to 1.
Kudos to Bama for getting out early on this and hiring the prototype model "SABAN"

Ok. LSU’s defense is still better than Auburn’s.

I don't think he's saying you don't need a great defense, but that a modern great defense isn't gonna look like Bama/LSU circa 2011.
Posted on 9/8/19 at 11:20 pm to Eli Goldfinger
Why, because LSU's defense looked like hot garbage?
Posted on 9/8/19 at 11:32 pm to Eli Goldfinger
Agree somewhat but at some point in a game you need to get some stops. Not necessarily 3 and outs but stops. Turnovers, force FG or something. Just look at OU. Ton of points but can’t stop anyone
