This doesn't make any sense. If they are positive now they should be negative by the time the game gets here. Why announce they can't play if they test negative 3 days before the actual game?

Missouri's count of players who will miss the team's season-opener against Alabama on Sept. 26 due to COVID-19 protocols is up to 12, Tigers coach Elijah Drinkwitz said Wednesday. Though not all 12 have necessarily tested positive for the coronavirus, the SEC mandates a 14-day quarantine for those who have been in "prolonged close contact" with someone who tests positive.
An instance of "prolonged close contact" is when a person has spent 15 minutes within 6 feet of someone in the two days prior to their development of COVID-19 symptoms, according to the SEC's medical guidelines.
"We've got to make due," Drinkwitz said. "We're going to tee it up the 26th, and everybody in Missouri is going to expect that we're prepared. So we're going to get ready."
Drinkwitz did not specify what positions the 12 players represent, and the league has not announced a minimum threshold of players that will be required for games this season. The Big 12 is requiring teams to have at least 53 players, including seven offensive linemen, four interior defensive linemen and one quarterback available for games. The ACC guidelines similarly require teams to have at least seven healthy, scholarship offensive linemen available for games.
Though Drinkwitz said "right now we're fine," the Tigers' count of COVID-19 related absences could still climb as the program is scheduled to undergo more rounds of COVID-19 testing before hosting the Crimson Tide in Drinkwitz's debut a week from Saturday.
"I can't forecast the future," Drinkwitz said. "I just take the results that come to me."

Either we aren’t playing them or we are about to beat them by 50

Interesting to me that coach Saban just announced that they would now be testing the players every day. They don't have to, but you got to believe that coach Saban is trying to get ahead of these punitive penalties associated with contact tracing.

Understand... So let’s say by some misfortune and they cancel, will it be considered a forfeit?
or reschedule for a later date.

That's really the only way to do it. I mean if you only test twice a week or something you could have 3-4 positives knock out 20 players. If you test every player every day then you eliminate the need to contact trace.

That was gonna happen even if they were at full strength.

I believe they would go to their first common open date and play it then. Just a guess.

I don’t think they have much wiggle room for rescheduling. The game could very well be canceled. Not postponed, not forfeited, just canceled. If the B1G can get away with playing only 8 games, why can’t the SEC?

They should have just kept the conference schedule as is to build in the extra two bye weeks. I never understood the need to play the extra 2 games when stadium capacity is going to be so limited to begin with. 5 vs 4 home games offers minimal benefit to local economies but adding two games combined with the delayed start offers almost no wiggle room for making up games.

It's a 25% boost to the local economies.

There's only one open date for every SEC team in 2020. It just so happens both Alabama and Missouri are off on November 7, so postponing it until then is possible.
However, I'd prefer to just cancel the game, if it came to that, rather than postpone it. As it stands now, no other SEC team would play 10 straight games (and possibly 11, assuming we get to the championship game).
Cancelling the game isn't ideal, but it beats the heck out of 10 (or 11) straight SEC games.

2020 SEC football schedule: (Link in 1st post)
Bama and Mizzou have a common open date on 11/7, but rescheduling there would cause 10-11 consecutive games without a bye week break. Not good. B1G teams have 9 weeks to play their 8 scheduled games. The B1G CG is on Dec 19.
Teams need to show up and play, even if some guys are out due to quarantine. Same applies for Bama. We probably lost more playing time via injuries to key starting players last season than we'll lose via quarantines this season.

Don't know if the SEC would cancel a game, the team that couldn't field a team would have to forfeit.
Otherwise you could run into a situation like, Bama goes 8-1 and A&M goes 9-1, but loses to Bama. A&M has the better record and higher win percentage and Bama loses out on a trip to the SEC Title Game because Missouri couldn't field a team week 1.

The ACC eliminated divisions to deal with this. Taking the top two teams by winning percentage. But that still doesn’t answer all issues that could arise.
