A University of Georgia sprinter had to be rushed to the hospital on Tuesday after suffering a potentially life-threatening injury, according to a release from UGA.
Elija Godwin, a freshman on the team, was doing a backwards sprint drill when he ran into the javelin sitting on a javelin rack. It went through the runner’s back and punctured his lung.
Teammates rushed to his aid and put gauze around the wound until they were able to transport him to the hospital for surgery. Medical personnel had to saw off the piece sticking out of his back to get him into the ambulance, but the front piece of the javelin was still in his chest. He was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.
11 Alive spoke with Godwin’s mother, Ginger Luby, who said that he is out of surgery, off the oxygen and breathing on his own.
The injury will cause Godwin to miss the remainder of the season but a full recovery is expected, according to UGA Director of Sports Medicine Ron Courson.
“We would like to express appreciation for all those who acted so quickly and efficiently in coming to the aid of Elija,” said Courson. “Special thanks to our sports medicine staff, UGA Police Department, Athens-Clarke County Fire-Rescue, National EMS, and Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.”

Would said javelin had taken out a dragon?

Know your surroundings, bro. And that's some fast backward sprinting.

When I was much younger and working at a summer camp, one of the counselors was rushed to the hospital after getting impaled with one of those trash pickers... Long wooden handle with a nail embedded in the end. Apparently, some punk kid thought it would be a funny idea to chuck it across a big open field and just bad timing he walked in the way at the wrong time... Ended up hitting his heart (or maybe the aorta?)... But the guy survived.
Glad to hear Elija is going to be ok.

I've gotta be honest, this is the first thing I thought of too.

That's why we don't have javelin @ the HS level. Of course this one wasn't even in the air.

This goes beyond rivalries, hope he makes a full recovery!

Prayers sent for a speedy recovery to Elija...reminds me of a guy I knew in high school ...he was on the high school track team practicing when one of his teammates launched the javelin off course...he was walking with his back to him and the javelin tore into his calf muscle...wasn’t a pretty site but it could have been much worse..he did recover from the injury luckily...

Happy to see he's out of surgery and breathing on his own.

Can’t believe they left the javelin in his lung and sawed it in half.
Pulling it out seems healthier than an ambulance ride with a spear in your back.

We jumped into (parachuted) Houston back in ‘81 I think it was .... Marsh or March AFB, but I can’t be sure about the name.
Anyway, some dumbass flyboys put orange vests wrapped around green metal fence stakes to mark where they didn’t want us to PLF .... but Mother Nature and her wind had other ideas. We had a half dozen guys impaled in various body parts.
1982 we jumped into the Mohave Desert in California (Operation Gallant Eagle) .... winds kicked up when we were exiting the aircraft and we had six or seven killed and over 100 critically injured. Worst injury I saw that day other than the deaths was this buddy of mine shattered his femur on the landing and his femur ripped through his thigh and lodged in his stomach .... have never seen anything like it before or since. He was screaming and the bone was so splintered it was stuck in his gut like a fishhook.
Being impaled by anything is just not cool.
