Mid major hires are a coin flip.
Yeah. Pretty much every SEC team hires either a mid major or a retread.
He's a young guy that will bring good energy at least, and his teams have been near the top in tempo. At the very least, I think he'll provide more on court excitement than just a ball screen every play.

Yep - and he has a coherent strategy and philosophy.
We'll see how it works out.

Another Jelly of the Month hire. This happens when ADs are pressured by the clock. Might work out, but why do they take a chance?

He beat Buffalos previous coach by 20 in the first round. With the other guys players.

Bama needed a name
Trying to win the press conference never ends well.
Of Rick Barnes, Will Wade, and Avery Johnson, Johnson got by far the most national media attention when he was announced.

Nate Oats
This dude was at a high school before he came to Buffalo as an assistant. He took Hurley's recruits and won with them. Damn.

I agree with Smoove. Bama needed a name. Some white dude from Wisconsin with 4 years experiance won't cut it. Should be fun.
Yeah Oats inherited a well-built team in Buffalo. Bruce Pearl inherited shite.
Alabama has talent, but if they canned Avery Johnson after 4 years, I'm wondering if Oats even has that long.

Because why the hell not? I mean if you're taking this approach you must be hoping Auburn never cans Gus either because Gus is okay too.
I'd rather shoot to be good than be mired in mediocrity. Hell I'd rather be bad, so at least I can stop getting invested than be the same bubble team every year.

I think this is one of the biggest things Bama had to do. You guys have had your eyes bled out the past decade from slow/poor offense basketball in the Grant/Johnson era. The most points/gm in any of those seasons was 72 the last 2 seasons, and that might be contributed to the shot clock change from 35 to 30 fairly recently
I can tell you if I ever had to go back to Trent Johnson era bball I might give up watching my team it sucked so much. Nothing like throwing up in the low to mid 60s each game and praying your defense gets you through to the win.

Just think of the good nicknames he can have- Oat(s) the Goat, Wild Oats, etc. If he gets fired early we can go punny with Rye we barley knew ya Oats. This is an excellent hire for these very reasons.
Pawwwwwwwl and Oats.

Yea - the pros on him are that he has a very defined principled philosophy of basketball that is based around playing fast, quick possessions and good shooting.
If it's bad, at least it won't be stand around sludge bad.

Johnson promised up-tempo and coined the "buckle up" tagline, but forgot to coach defense to help in creating an up tempo style.
