This may be a dumb question for those living in or near cities with pro teams, but I'm interested in what residents' favorite teams are in states without pro teams; for instance, what is the most popular professional sports team in Alabama and Mississippi?

I'm from Tennessee and can tell you the Titans and Predators are strictly a Middle Tennessee thing. Despite the Titans being the only NFL team in TN, people from Memphis and Knoxville don't really care about the Nashville area teams. Memphis actually hates the Titans for skipping them over in the late 1990s.

For Kentucky it's probably the Bengals. In the southwestern part of the state, maybe the titans.

Edited to update Reds for the state of Kentucky, probably more so than Bengals.

Depends on what part of the state you're asking about.

I think it depends on the sport for Knoxville. Knoxville is a very Pro Preds town and a hodge podge mix of different NFL teams.

Well 40 years ago it was professional wrestling. Maybe not an actual sport mind you, but every week they did moon landing ratings on local TV for the wrestling show.

Now it is the Grizzlies.

Memphis is an odd sports town. They sort of kind of support the Grizzlies. And they sort of kind of, not so much, support the University of Memphis.

I think there are more SEC team fans in Memphis then there are fans of... well... Memphis. Memphis might be the best SEC city in the country in that you will find someone who cheers on any team and there really isn't something local to distract them.

Packers here in Northern WI. Occasionally see some Brewers stuff but not much. Very little Bucks. Second most popular are the Bears.

South Mississippi: easily the Saints. I have a lot of friends with season tickets.

I live in Birmingham AL and I'll run it down by sport:

Local team: Birmingham Barons (particularly from up the mountain, since they played a long time at the Hoover Met, but it will be interesting to see how much support the semi-Pro FB team will have)

MLB - Atlanta Braves by far
NFL - A good bit of Falcons, some Cowboys, some Steelers (really it's a hodge podge since there are so many kids that come out of HS playing for different NFL teams)
NBA - A good bit of Bulls paraphernalia, but the majority of people you ask are surprisingly Lakers fans, small contingents of Hawks and Grizzlies fams
NHL - The large majority and Preds fans

I'm an outlier to all of these

I'm a Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an Orlando Magic, Philadelphia Phillies, and St Louis Blues (if I HAD to choose an NHL team)

Important for me to add that Memphis loves the Grizzlies, even if they suck. Lot of pride for their team.

I live in Virginia (not NoVa)and there is not nearly as much support for the Redskins as you would think. If I had to guess I would say they are the most popular team but it's probably a plurality and not a majority and not much passion either. There is even less interest, if any, for the Nats, Bullets and Caps.

Everywhere I've lived Black people are either Cowboy or Steeler fans and I've always lived somewhere with an NFL team nearby. It's bizarre and they aren't shy about it either.

Born and raised in East TN, lived there for 25 years.

Arizona almost 6 years. Now in Tucson, you get a weirrrrd mix of Cardinals, Raiders, Chargers and Cowboys fans.

The UofA and ASU rivalry is cute to watch. But it pales in comparison to any SEC rivalry.

TL;DR: West coast sporting entertainment is just different. Fair weather as frick.

Atlanta Braves

Growing up in the late 90's/early 2000's the Braves were the team to follow in my area of Metro Atlanta. The Falcons have caught on recently with some of the success we've seen under Arthur Blank, but if the Falcons are doing poorly (like this year) some of the fans in Cobb tend to sink away.

Even if the Braves aren't good, so many people in my area still love going to the games and hanging around and watching them on TV. Placing SunTrust Park in Cobb County was a homerun decision by the Braves.
