al.com reports Vinnie is joining staff as GA
quote:
Nick Saban is expected to soon add another former Alabama player to the Crimson Tide staff. Former Alabama safety Vinnie Sunseri is expected to join the Tide staff as a graduate assistant, sources told AL.com. A fifth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2014, Sunseri last played in the NFL in 2016 when he was a member of the San Francisco 49ers. After starting seven games as a sophomore at Alabama in 2012, Sunseri was emerging as one of the nation’s top safeties in 2013 and had two pick-sixes during the team’s first seven games of that season but suffered a season-ending knee injury and then left for the NFL. Sunseri played for nine games with the Saints in 2014 and six with the 49ers in 2016.

His early departure was the strangest one of the Saban era.

There was some weird stuff going on with Sunseri's departure and who we brought in to DC.

Matt Zenitz has to have a big on Sabans office. There is no other way to explain it.

New Orleans Saints
Sunseri was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round, 167th overall, in the 2014 NFL Draft. On May 16, 2014, Sunseri signed a four-year contract Saints. On November 12, 2014, Sunseri was placed on injured reserve with an arm injury. On September 1, 2015, he was waived.
On September 2, 2015, after clearing waivers, Sunseri was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. On April 25, 2016, he was released.
New England Patriots
On July 24, 2016, Sunseri was signed by the New England Patriots. On September 3, 2016, he was released by the Patriots as part of final roster cuts. On September 6, 2016, Sunseri signed to the Patriots' practice squad. He was released by the Patriots on October 24, 2016.

Sunseri was hoping to land a spot as a reserve safety but always faced long odds at cracking the final 53. Perhaps he'll stay on as a member of the practice quad. Sunseri has endured two ACL tears since entering the league as a fifth-round pick in 2014. Sat, Sep 3, 2016 03:11:00 PM
San Francisco 49ers

seemed most were surprised by the choice to 'early out'; but, it was also pretty clear that the up and coming Safeties were going to make Vinnie's playing time a lot less his senior year

I miss the vinny badger. I feel pretty damn good about this move

It was just another chapter in the love/hate relationship Saban and Sal Sunseri have, they had different opinions over Vinnie staying/leaving.
Hell, considering how things are going, one of Sal Sunseri or Lance Thompson may be coaching in TTown in 2019

I’d rather have Sal Sunseri back before Lance Thompson. Alabama doesn’t need Round Four of Horndog Lance.
