Former Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin, fired in October after a lengthy investigation into the death of one of his players, has resurfaced at Alabama.
In his first foray back into football since his October firing, Durkin has been helping Alabama this past week in a consultant-like capacity, sources told AL.com. It’s unclear at this point if Durkin could have a long-term role on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff though, according to sources.
Durkin had been off the radar since Halloween, when Maryland fired him following that lengthy investigation after the death of Jordan McNair during an offseason workout and reports of a toxic culture within the football program. ESPN, citing interviews with current and former Maryland players, reported there was a culture of “bullying, verbal abuse and humiliation directed at players” during the Durkin era.

Dude, if Saban can turn Durkin into something another program would hire he HAS to win the Medal of Freedom.

They just grab old, used up head coaches and bring them as consultants and hire them on the reg?

Saban’s shadow staff is better than lsu’s full time staff

If O.J. shows up at UA then we can see if Saban truly is the rehaber of all rehabers.

Durkin can recruit. But yes, Saban has become the HC rehabilitation program

Saban scoops these guys up for their contacts and help in recruiting.

Durkin hasn't been hired as a coach. He's doing part-time consultant work. He's not an analyst or assistant. This is most likely related to game planning/scouting for the playoff.

I wish Durkin would've stayed here but McElwain ran him off.

You know, I have enormous respect for Saban as a coach, but it's really getting just weird now. It's like watching a pitch-black dramatic comedy and wondering if you're supposed to laugh or treat it as a serious plotline.
On the other hand, I have to admit that there's something a bit inspiring about coaches getting a chance to redeem themselves and return to coaching wiser and a bit more humble. In times past, most of them would have spent the rest of their careers scrounging for mid- and low-level jobs, never getting a real shot at returning to the big time in some capacity.
