This is the situation at Auburn now: top donors and university officials are so unhappy with the head football coach that they are seeking to undercut him by limiting assistants' contracts to single year deals. This is currently preventing AU from hiring Hugh Freeze as OC. /1

Josh Moon ? @Josh_Moon Freeze is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal from future employers. Sources said Malzahn has asked AU to wave the recent restriction on multi-year contracts in order to hire Freeze. AU response: Nah. /2

They will be hiring a new coach and staff after next season.

I think one year deals are pretty standard for assistants. It's just been in recent years that has changed and those contracts have skyrocketed.

I don't blame Gus, looks like the university is the problem

Here's what it sounds like:

Gus is being set up to fail on purpose because he called their bluff when they wanted to renegotiate his contract. They were HOPING he would walk but he didn't.

Leath needs to be shown the door immediately over this debacle.

Yeah, that plan fell apart. Don't know why they didn't just fire him if they wanted him gone. Want to save money that bad?

That isn't standard at all. One year deals mean that every season your arse can get dumped with no buyout or anything and unless you are just starting out, why would a coordinator of any real worth take that?

Yeah. They want to be in the same boat as A&M. Overpay longterm for an average coach instead of having one with a large buyout.

Gus should leave if they arent going to let him do anything. I don't know who they think they are going to get that's worth investing in longterm.

Sounds like they're doing the same thing that Bama did to Curry to get him to leave.

This is Auburn being Auburn. Fire him or give him what he needs to attempt to be successful.

So, basically, they're not standard anymore, especially for coordinators. I'm not sure any coordinator in our conference didn't sign a multi-year deal when hired.

Freeze especially doesn't seem like someone who would take a deal that doesn't give him some security. The first bad game his arse would be on fire and all of his stupid shite would get shoved at him immediately.

called their bluff? Didn't he agree to reduce his buyout? I wouldn't call that "calling their bluff."

Agree. The BOTs can go frick themselves for doing this.

I would think desperation would set in at some point.

The thing Freeze really needs to be worried about is Gus Bus not letting him run the offense and him being stigmatized by Floppy Tit's bad offensive decision making.
