As impressive as the true freshman was coming off the bench to convert on two short-yardage runs and two third down plays, Smart was even more impressed with Fields earlier in the week leading up to the SEC East Division showdown.

“I told our guys, here’s a guy who didn’t play a snap last week, (but) you didn’t hear anything out of him, all he did is come out and work this week,” Smart said, asked about trusting Fields enough to enter him into the pivotal road game with the season on the line.

“I thought he had his best practice of the year on Tuesday and he had a good practice on Wednesday. I told them, I said, ‘Man, this guy’s practicing. He’s buying in, he’s positive, cheering on the sideline and he goes in and plays well.’

D’Andre Swift, who did most of the damage with a career-high 156 yards, saw first-hand how Fields’ presence freezes defensive fronts.

“Justin brings a different element to the game,” Swift said. “He can pass, he can run, and defenses are aware of that and the ends know they need to stay on their jobs. If they don’t respect it, Justin’s just going to run, so they have to respect it.”

Fields was back in the Kentucky game later in the fourth quarter, showing what he could do with a spectacular 9-yard run on a third-and-9 from the Kentucky 28.

Fromm was among those most impressed.

“You know he does an awesome job of running and finding some extra yards in places,” Fromm said. “He’s a fast kid and a strong runner, so it gives us another way to utilize the running game and pick up some extra chunks of yards.”

Smart hinted Fields may have more playing time ahead with the Bulldogs hosting rival Auburn at 7 p.m. on Saturday before closing the regular season with home games against UMass and Georgia Tech.

“I just wish we could get to the point that we could play (Fields) a little more because he’s getting better,” Smart said. “He does a lot of good things — and he doesn’t just have to run the ball — the situations today dictated that and he did a great job of doing it.”

I do hope Fields gets a lot of time for the UMASS and GT game because we need him up to par for the SECCG if he is needed.

I stated earlier that I want to see the same thing. If we get way ahead of UMASS (which we will) then let the kid play. I want to see him throw the damn ball for once.

I thought it was noteworthy on the walkoff interview with Kirby, the reporter on the field asked him a generic question about the players, big win etc, and the first name he mentioned was Justin Fields.

Of all the players that made plays in that game, the first name out of his mouth was Justin Fields.

John "Tipbman?" is with Kirby...

John- "Coach, you came into the game with a banged up OL, you lose two offensive lineman, how are you able to have such an impressive run game?"

Kirby- "Well, good backs, good recruiting, and toughness... our kids ar tough, resilient, they fight, and I wanna give alot of credit to coach stoops and his team, they've got a bunch of seniors, they played really hard, but our guys played extremely physical today and answered the bell"

John- "SEC East Division champs, what is so special about this year's team?"

Kirby- "Well I think this year's team had to answer alot of questions, they've had to battle, it hasn't come easy, I mean we didn't make it easy today, never comes easy, now I wanna give alot of credit now to those two quarterbacks on our team. Justin Fields comes in the game and makes some huge plays for us, he continues to get better and had one of his best weeks in practice, and he did that after not even playing the game, and Jake did well too."

John- "Thank you coach."

I noticed that, too. Sounded almost forced, like CKS was making a point to show him some love to the public.

Well in all honestly it was weird not letting Justin take one snap last week at Florida.

No way Fields didn't feel a little bit shafted...cause he was. I hope Kirby continues to let him play more as they refuse to let him get any kind of rhythm.

Fromm is the guy, not doubting that, but Fields could have scored on both Goaline stands against UF and Kentucky.

Maybe. Fromm isn't a little dude and he couldn't get any push against their DL; credit goes to them. It's possible Fields could have done better but the issue was with the DL, not necessarily Fromm on those plays. Our RBs couldn't get any push, either, and I don't think anyone's going to argue that they suck.

Regardless, my assumption is that the reason why Fields wasn't getting the snaps against FL is because of the lack of trust with him. CKS made a point after the game to say that Fields had a really good week of practice including the best day of practice he's had at UGA last Tuesday and earned his snaps. I suppose it's possible that he had a not-so-good two weeks leading up to the Florida game or that he just didn't do enough to earn the trust of the coaches to get the playing time he wants.

This is the game changer. Would have at least given us a shot vs. LSU. Will be our only hope to dethrone the gumps.

Honestly, I think one reason Kirby absolutely lost his shite when we couldn’t score on the goal line is because we didn’t even try to use Fields. If you ask me, anytime we get inside 5 yardline, Fields needs to be taking the snaps.

He needs to play A LOT against Umass. I mean at least an entire half.

Fromm should play the first 2 series against UMass and Fields should play every snap after that. He needs reps with the 1st team, reps running the entire offense, and reps when the game isn’t totally in hand. The UMass game is just a glorified scrimmage, really. Use it as a practice for Fields, IMO.

Eh...if we are ever in a spot where downing has to take meaningful snaps, we will run the ball 90+% and likely be in some real trouble.
