This guy can't punt the ball 50 yards period

Interesting observation. Here is another interesting observation:

(11:01 - 2nd) Skyler DeLong punt for 51 yds, downed at the TexAM 43
(13:02 - 4th) Skyler DeLong punt for 50 yds, downed at the TexAM 11

DeLong’s problem right now is consistency. Hopefully it is nerves and the new special teams coach can work him through it before he cranks out too many more 12 yarders.

I mean, he had like a 12-yard punt at one point and shanked another. Distance is definitely an issue. Maybe he's worrying too much about directional punting and that's why he's struggling to boom it.

I don't know what the half rugby thing was. However, if he can't figure it out in the next three or four games I'd be fine with going all out on the rugby kick.

Again, on the shank they were clearly trying to put the ball between the hash and the sideline. Sitting on the front row of the upper deck, right behind him, you could clearly see that. The rugby thing also I think is less about hang time and more trying to get more distance on the roll and zero return. And in both of those cases, that's also a coaching decision. Now, maybe they are choosing to go that route because he's no JK Scott. But the shank wasn't just a case of him trying to boom the ball down the field and missing it.

That was an awful punt that he got 15 yards of incredibly fortuitous bounces on. He shanked it so badly A&M's returner couldn't even come grab it on the fly.

(9:10 - 1st) Skyler DeLong punt for 35 yds, downed at the TexAM 1 Delong standing on 50 to rec snap (Ruggs catches at the 1/2 yd ling)
(11:01 - 2nd) Skyler DeLong punt for 51 yds, downed at the TexAM 43 Delong standing near the end line in the end zone - hits on Bama 40 and rolls to A&M 43 *17 yds on the roll
(12:31 - 3rd) Skyler DeLong punt for 13 yds, punt out-of-bounds at the TexAM 48 Delong awaits snap at the Bama 25 marked out at the A&M 48 (1 yd beyond what would have given Bama a 1st down)
(4:17 - 3rd) Skyler DeLong punt for 31 yds, punt out-of-bounds at the TexAM 42 Delong awaits the snap at the Bama 13, ball hits at the Bama 49 bounces to A&M 42 *9 yds on the roll
(13:02 - 4th) Skyler DeLong punt for 50 yds, downed at the TexAM 11 Delong awaits snap at Bama 25 Ball hits on A&M 21 bounces to 12 * 9 yds on the roll
(3:03 - 4th) Skyler DeLong punt for 36 yds, fair catch by Roshauud Paul at the TexAM 12 Delong awaits snap at Bama 38

Fairness.. not sure if the rugby style that was tried several times was something they were working on? or what, but it seems to have bitten them in the Puntkin.
Maybe he will be more consistent just punting? dont know. the one he punted to Ruggs was magic. rest of the day, was eyes closed, tell me when the play is over stuff.

I think he was the #4 rated punter coming out of high school. You'd think a guy like that could average in the mid forties anyway. I'm going to watch and see what happens. A lot of his punt results may be situational at this point. It always seems like we stress hang time vs. distance so they don't get to return it.

OK so many of you go to the games right? You have been assigned to be at the game and in that stadium before the Bama specialty players come out for their warmups. The punter will either stand around the 50 or he will stand in our endzone for his punts. I will say he will NOT punt the ball 50 yards from toe to receiver 5 times out of 10. He doesn't have the leg strength to do that. Nick and staff gave this sideways shet a try because the guy is so pathetic. All I can say is the backup and they have one must be one legged.

Is this a prediction or an observation?

Prediction....I was late to A-Day as far as the warm-ups. During the game he knocked some dead inside the 20 but he never actually hit a really good punt for distance. I will go out on a limb and say he will NOT e at Alabama for the 2019 season.

Yeah, that is the big thing I noticed as well.

Can the Temple kid punt at all?

It would really not be fair if we had a great punter and kicker. We already have the best QB to go along with a Saban defense and 5 stars on the bench. It just feels like the football gods will not let it happen.

Also, I remember when it seemed like our best player was the punter, so times are good.

Jones had a strong two and a half seasons at Temple before tearing his left ACL on kickoff coverage halfway into the 2016 season. He returned to play 4 games in 2017, converting 4-5 each on extra points and field goals.

Before the injury he missed just one PAT in 98 attempts. After an inconsistent freshman season in which he made only 59 percent of his field goal attempts, he converted at better than 80 percent during his sophomore and junior seasons pre-injury.

No mention of Punting sadly to say...
we do have the E. Ill transfer #98 Mike Bernier
P 6-2 219 Sr Madison, Al / Bob Jones HS / Eastern Ill
CAREER STATS
SEASON PUNTS AVG LNG YDS
2015.......62.......37.7....56.....2335
seems like no upgrade...

Both of those 50 yard punts went 35 and rolled forward 15.

Dude doesn't have the leg and we really need to cut bait on him.

Yeah... punting is not the same as kicking a field goal.

Also confidence issues doesn't impede yout leg from having the power to consistantly hit the ball over 40 yards.

Anybody know is non-undergrads are eligible for a walk-on spot? I'm built like JK and can probably train enough to get to 45 yards on a consistent basis.

Saban explains Alabama's roll-out punts, talks Aussie punters (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Against Texas A&M, Alabama freshman punter Skyler DeLong rolled out to his right during his six punts this past weekend. A caller asked Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban about rugby-style punts during his call-in radio show Thursday evening, and Saban explained why DeLong’s drop was similar to the style many punters across the college football landscape choose to use.

“I think one of the reasons is it’s easy to protect, No. 1, because you’re rolling out basically when you punt,” Saban said. “It’s almost like if you’re blitzing the quarterback and he can roll out, if he gets by one guy, you have no pressure. Well, it’s a similar thing. The rugby punt is very difficult to field. You get a lot of roll. We don’t really want to rugby punt, aight. So, for those of you out there that think because we’ve rolled with our punter a few times -- we’re trying to get him to develop confidence into being able to punt.

“He’s a freshman. He punts very well in practice. We get in the game, he gets nervous and he’s moving the wall around and drops the ball bad, inside, outside. So, that’s a matter of confidence, so we’re trying to find a style that fits him. We don’t need to rugby punt. We can kick it right, we can kick it left, we can kick it down the middle. We have coverage patterns to do whatever he can do. He’s done a pretty job of Aussie kicking when we do the (end-over-end stuff). And we’ve downed some balls inside the 10-yard line.

“But his consistency is something that we need to work on. We tried the rugby style just trying to get him to be able to develop confidence in doing that, thinking it would be a little easier for him. So, it’s a work in progress, but I think if he develops confidence, he’ll be a good punter. But that is the advantage of rugby punts. It starts with the protection, it’s hard to field.”
