30,000-plus ink petition to free LSU'st Mike the Tiger who 'shouldn’t be ... entertainment'

LSU friends, I know this has been discussed before ... but I see the topic of your mascot is back in the news this week. My apologies if other threads have already been posted on the subject—I must’ve missed em.

But what exactly is going on now? Why the latest outcry? Is it just a factor of it being a new FB season?

Obviously these folks come outta the woodwork regularly to protest the idea of keeping a tiger in captivity; this isn’t y’all’s first controversial rodeo. But what are your gut feelings on how the university may choose to handle the issue, long term? Do they seem to vehemently support the idea of a live mascot?

Genuinely curious.

This has been proven time and time again. These tigers both live longer and BETTER than "free roaming" tigers.

They receive better treatment than some humans get for christs sake.

This arguement is tired.

If these snowflakes spent this amount of time on racism and starvation this country might actually get somehwere.

Rant over.

So dumb. The tiger needed a home and is probably in excellent conditions. So what are animals to be used for? To eat? To make clothes? LSU does talk a lot about Tiger Meat.

LSU invested $3 million for Mike's home.

Would the tiger rather a $3 million home or going back to the wild to fend for himself? frick these losers.

I've become immune to these. Happens at least twice a year, but nothing ever actually happens. LSU is just an easy target for fake outrage.

I am convinced most of them think LSU sends a group to Africa to capture a wild tiger and bring him back to Baton Rouge. Mikes are donated from Tiger sanctuary's now, and given a drastically better life than they would otherwise have. The reality is that Mike would be slaughtered in the wild.

The funny part is if Mike was released to the wild like they want he'd probably die quickly...well I guess not the part about him dying but the irony of it all.

I don’t know what Mikes situation is. I would think that since he is living in captivity it would be hard if not impossible for him to survive in the wild. I think wild animals should live in the wild but once they have been removed from their natural environment they should be given the best life we can give them. I susoect that he is getting that at LSU

LSU took the Tiger who came from facility that was cited for health and safety violations by Flordia officials where he had to be transported to a sanctuary to await purchase or death.

LSU provides a $3mm home, he's treated like a king for the remainder of his life. I'd say living in his current pad is a better alternative than living in squalor and awaiting your eventual death.

People just can't mind their own business. This mike came from a sanctuary that could no longer take care of him. He wouldn't survive in the wild. He has better care and a better life then some people, and it's a hell of a lot better than tigers in a zoo.

F. King Alexander probably wants to cave in to them. But, he’s smart enough to know that would blow over like a shite brick balloon.

These PETA loons do this every year. And every year they get told to eat a dick. They have no idea what LSU does for Mike or tigers in general. They are endangered. They need our help.

If LSU sucked like Memphis State, they could have a live tiger as a mascot and nobody would give a shite.

By the way, Memphis has a nice setup for their tiger too. That dude lives better than most of us. I'm sure Mike does as well.

What do they want LSU to do with Mike? Wasn't he raised in captivity and rescued to LSU? They can't send him back to the wild, he wouldn't survive.

Total BS.. PETA... They need to worry about the Tigers that are treated poorly.

They hate that AU has an Eagle, but we only keep Eagles that cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries. (NOTE: We have multiple Eagles, Spirit is a Bald Eagle).

Tom III at the University of Memphis is the only other live tiger mascot. The University of North Alabama in Florence has two lions and Ralphie the Buffalo leads the University of Colorado team on the field after an AC/DC song. Baylor University has bears in an on-campus zoo exhibit in Waco, Texas. And there’s the golden eagle at Auburn.
