Dumb analyst talking point

“Will X fanbase be patient enough to let coach X build a program”
Just a mindless comment I always hear from talking heads. This situation hardly ever comes about. coach either has it or he doesn’t. A good coach will deliver a significantly better product from day one. I cant think of the last slow burn to success where a coach took 4-5 seasons to win a championship. A good coach doesn’t require patience because he immediately brings excitement from day one. Only bad coaches require patience from the fans.

All you need to know is recruiting rankings in year 2 3

Hell Arkansas fans were on board with Bert through most of the 2016 season
Most fanbase will give time as long as some growth is evident. Most only want to cut the cord when things stay the same or take a step back

Kirby Smart went 4-4 in the SEC East with losses to Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Georgia Tech, in his first year.

And year 2 he was one play away from a national championship. I get your point, but im sure Georgia fans saw enough to know they had a potentially very good coach.
What you just never see is a coach go 5-6, 7-5, 8-4, 9-3, 11-1, championship. If it ever happens its at a place with lower stakes.
My ultimate point is that patience never works. Fans that see improvement don’t require patience.

U can tell if a coach is making progress right away. When I go back to sabans first year, yea u had the ulm thing but u also saw them take a very good Georgia team to overtime, outplay eventual national champ Lsu and beatdown sec east champion Tennessee 41-17. U could tell it was rising. Same with Kirby in 2016. Georgia just looked better under him. U could plainly see Georgia was going up a notch. I agree, u just know before x number of years pass.

Freeze went:
7-6, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3, and then straight to the massage parlor resulting in 5-7.

Freeze never sniffed an SEC title much less a playoff birth. Everyone knew he was what Gus is at the barn. Gimmick offense that produces enough wins to make it hard to fire him, but never truly a championship level coach.

Fair point. Freeze is a good coach and those records at Ole Miss after the mess they had before that was a huge turnaround. The fans knew he was improving the program and they didnt have to be patient. The equivalent to the argument im making I guess would have Freeze starting off 4-8 or something like that(OM was 2-10 the year before).

He was also a few flukes away from finishing 11-2.
Saban went 4-4 in the SEC in year one at Bama with a loss to ULM.

If I never hear the terms, “talking point” or, “narrative” again, it’ll be too soon. I can’t believe people aren’t embarrassed to use them still.

When hear the same exact thing from different people who are supposed to have their own informed opinion, its a talking point. Its just lazy IMO. What set me off was some chode on Finebaum talking UT fans needing to be patient. Its a dumb talking point. No UT fan is expecting an SEC championship this season

Does Clemson fit in this narrative?

Got to disagree there. Ole Piss was one fluke play by R-Kansas away from being the SEC West Champ.
