That Orange Bowl win was one of the best games I've ever watched.

According to the final AP ballot, Notre Dame had 4 quality wins

And the WORST loss.

I can tell you that as in your post, Notre Dame always got the benefit. It wasn't just along geographical lines but religious. All Catholics voted Notre Dame.

Had we not started passing out ballets evenly throughout the nation Notre Dame would have won:

1989- They lost to Miami bad but beat number 1 Colorado in the Orange Bowl. They would have vaulted over Miami to number one.
1992- Notre Dame defeated number 3 Texas A&M soundly in the cotton. Bama blew out number one Miami but they would have vaulted Notre Dame to number as they would have said the A&M win was more impressive.
1993- Notre Dame again defeated A&M in the cotton in impressive fashion and had beaten FSU in the regular season BUT ND lost to Boston College the next week. That would have been overlooked and after number one FSU defeated number 2 Nebraska in the Orange, Notre Dame would have vaulted from number 3 by virtue the Irish had beaten FSU in the regular season.

I guarant damn tee u they would have won all of these. If Notre Dame just wasn't completely out of it on Jan 1, they had a shot no matter where they were ranked.
However, it's interesting that since the voting became evened out across America, Notre Dame has won ONE....ONE national title.

Disagree with on 1992. Bama wins that one regardless of who was voting. It could have been 62 Catholic Voters from South Bend and they would have voted Bama the Champions. Everyone knew that Bama was the Champ no matter where you were from or who you pulled for.

I agree that way back a lot of anti Southern bias existed but by 1992 it had just about dissipated.

That same Ole Miss team we had just beaten by three scores upset Notre Dame in Jackson.

Is it really an upset if the heat index wears down the opponents' big uglies? If that happened today, the S&C coach would find himself on a short leash.

ND should've gotten at least a share that year. Bowden got the lifetime achievement award.
BC finished in the top 15, BTW.

Bama lost to highly rated nebraska by a TD

Jeff Rutledge threw 5 interceptions all season in 1977...all five came in that game against Nebraska...

Again, this is the weakest NC criterion. ND beat twice as many top 20 teams as Bama. Let that sink in. ND's resume was twice as good.

And you think Alabama wasn't getting the benefit of the doubt by that point? You guys are something else ... ND clearly had the better resume because THEY BEAT MORE GOOD TEAMS. Bama played a relatively weak schedule by comparison, and didn't get the nod. Sorry, but you guys aren't claiming this one.

Arkansas lost at #4 Texas
Alabama lost at #12 Nebraska
Notre Dame lost at unranked Ole Miss

Clearly Notre Dame deserved #1 and Alabama #2. There's a pattern!

Arkansas, Bama, ND, Penn State and Texas were all 11-1 and all could claim a NC.

Penn State could not since they weren't deemed the national champion by a "major selector." Bama, Arky, and Texas sort of could. All three of them were deemed national champion by at least 1 major selector. Prior to 1950, that was enough for you to lay a legitimate, infallible claim to the national championship (looking at you, 1941 Bama). After 1950 the NCAA designated certain selectors to name Consensus National Champions, meaning that for your claim to be official you had to be selected by one of these 5 publications.

Teams still claim nattys where they were selected by a "major selector" but not a "consensus selector" (looking at you 1959 and 1962 Ole Miss), but it literally holds as much weight as UCF's claim. The Colley Matrix is a major selector, so if it was pre 1950 UCF would have an actual national championship.
