The Southeastern Conference fined South Carolina men's basketball coach Frank Martin $25,000 for comments about an official that issued him a technical foul during a home loss to Florida.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey Monday also reprimanded Martin for his comments.
Martin went on tirade after Saturday's 65-41 loss , saying he was not happy that official Lee Cassell -- although Martin did not mention him by name -- was working the SEC game. Martin said the league gave Cassell his start and then he "turned his back on the SEC to go officiate the other leagues"

Interesting how it was a game against UF who also got away with a win at Missouri due to bad officiating.
The officiating this year in all of college basketball has been absolute dogshit. Worst I've ever seen it.

He's still 18 games under .500 in the SEC.

He's still correct about the pitiful referring.

Every ref officiates other leagues. The SEC doesn't have league officials in basketball.

Martin is clearly not a fan of that ref and maybe he is justified (don't know enough about the guy), although the foul in question appeared to be correct on replay if I am thinking of the right sequence where Silva tried to block a shot.

Regardless of his win/loss record, he's not wrong.

someone needs to fine the league office for going out of their way to hire such shitty refs

You do have a pretty consistent group that officiates certain conferences on a regular basis though.
Either way, I'm a firm believer that not only should coaches be allowed to speak about officials but that maybe officials should have to answer to media just like coaches and players do.

We're squarely into "it's baseball season" at this point.

SC Fans should pay him $25000 for that. These officials suck.

I don't know the specifics of the call(s) in questions, but I think it's ridiculous that refs are to be held in such infallible regard that simply questioning their calls warrants tens of thousands of dollars in personal, punitive fines.
We question the job of literally everyone in every position that the public has insight into. Yet these clowns are protected with a gun pointed at anyone's head that questions them.
There should be a line, of course, but that line shouldn't be set at "zero tolerance."

not enough refs gives them leverage... i say pay them more or allow for some kind of post season review that allows them to receive a bonus if they do their job.

I agree with you. You can see why coaches try so hard to never mention the refs in post game press conferences. The comments Frank Martin made weren't even that bad and he has to pay 25k for it. You could buy a new car with that.
