Maybe. But it is a highly populated area with the room to have facilities to promote the sport. It has been a hotbed for decades. Nebraska used to have half a dozen or more on their roster during their heyday.

With Antonio Alfano committed, who will be next addition to Alabama’s defensive line?

Ishmael Sopsher is one of Bama's top DL targets.

Alabama finished seventh in the 2018 class recruiting rankings, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or on  Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers  here.

What’s next for defensive line recruiting after Antonio Alfano‘s decision?

Alabama landed a major commitment on Friday when 4-star defensive end Antonio Alfano committed to the Tide over Georgia and Penn State. Alfano (Colonia, NJ) became the Tide’s third defensive line commitment in the 2019 class, joining 4-star defensive tackles Rashad Cheney and DJ Dale.

With so many elite defensive linemen strongly considering Alabama, I think the Tide will land at least six prospects across the line in this class. Who is next for the Tide on the defensive line? Here are the players that Alabama is heavily pursuing:

Ishmael Sopsher, 5-star DT, Amite, LA

Ishmael Sopsher is a top priority for Alabama. Sopsher took numerous trips to Tuscaloosa when sophomore wide receiver DeVonta Smith was going through his recruitment, so he is familiar with Tuscaloosa.

Sopsher’s interest level in the Tide fell off last year due to undisclosed issues with former defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Now that Pruitt is gone, Sopsher is back to looking favorably upon Alabama. He visited for the A-Day game last month and should be back on campus before the end of summer.

Sopsher has said he won’t make his college decision until National Signing Day, and this recruitment should turn out to be an Alabama-LSU battle. One thing that could make Sopsher’s recruitment interesting is if a school offers a scholarship to his older brother, Rodney, a junior college defensive lineman. The brothers want to attend the same school. Rodney currently has no offers.

Faatui Tuitele, 5-star DT, Honolulu, HI

Faatui Tuitele and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa are cousins, and the 5-star defensive tackle made his first visit to Tuscaloosa last month. The nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle told SEC Country that seeing Tua have the success he did as a freshman helps Alabama’s chances with him because the quarterback paved the way for a blue-chip Hawaiian recruit to choose a school not located on the West Coast.

Nathan Pickering, 4* DE, Seminary, MS

Nathan Pickering’s recruitment is still in its infant stages because there are so many teams still in the mix. Alabama is one of them. He told SEC Country that the Crimson Tide will receive an official visit from him this fall.

Byron Young, 4-star DE, Laurel, MS

Byron Young has gone back and forth with naming Alabama as his leader. The Crimson Tide led earlier this year, and then he backed off his comments, only to now say they lead once again.

Young is very close with his primary recruiter, Pete Golding. Golding has some excellent connections in Mississippi, and they should pay off for the Tide with at least one of the Mississippi defensive linemen.

Jaren Handy, 4* DE, New Augusta, MS

Jaren Handy is one of those recruits who falls in love with a school every time he visits, and he has realized that. He has held off on naming a leader recently because he knows he will change his mind.

Alabama is in good shape with Handy, though. He grew up a Tide fan and calls UA his dream school. Raekwon Davis is his role model, and he got a chance to meet him on campus last month. Handy has said he believes he can fill in for Davis if he ends up declaring for the NFL draft after this season.

Siaki Ika, 4-star DT, Salt Lake City, UT

Even though Alabama has a nose guard committed in DJ Dale, Siaki Ika can commit to the Crimson Tide if he wants to, as confirmed by SEC Country. We wrote about Ika on Thursday,  in case you missed our story

Alabama's Dynasty Igniters: Incredible 2008 Recruiting Class Sparked Turnaround

It is funny sometimes to me the "Trust the Process" slogan for recruits but the reality is had the 4 5 star transfers done that they potentially woud have been in better shape.

Barnett: Moving to 3rd team and 4th school in college career. Had he stayed with Bama his number would likely have been called in the National Title Game instead of Tua.

Sheffield: Not a bad landing, second year starter at Ohio State after a year in Juco. Will definitely be drafted. However he probably would have been better off with 4 years in Saban's system instead of bouncing around. Even with OSU's recent pedigree of having highly drafted DB's he will have a tougher time working his way into being an early draft pick because he transferred.

Sims: Transferred to Virginia after losing QB job to McCarron. Had academic issues at UVA and had to transfer again to finish at Winston-Salem State. Had he stayed on may have started the Blake Sims year and had Kiffin and Cooper make him look really good. Was an undrafted free agent but never made a regular system roster. Played a season in the CFL and now is a HS head coach.

BJ Scott: Transferred to South Alabama with 2 years of eligibility. Played one year before declaring and went undrafted. Made a Bear's camp before riding the pine in the CFL for a year. He probably would not have been drafted but you have to think 2 more years at Bama would have helped.

Always trust the process 5 stars, 9 times out of 10 you get rings and get drafted highly.

2019 Commitments (14) Rank: Nat Pos St
4* QB Taulia Tagovailoa (AL) 187 8 8
4* QB Paul Tyson (AL) 288 12 11
5* OL Pierce Quick (AL) 29 6 2
4* OL Tanner Bowles (KY) 251 27 5
4* OT Amari Kight (AL) 52 8 3
4* DT Rashad Cheney (GA) 197 12 22
4* DT DJ Dale (AL) 271 16 10
4* DE Antonio Alfano (NJ) 58 5 1
4* OLB Kevin Harris (GA) 83 5 9
4* OLB King Mwikuta (GA) 117 6 13
4* ILB Shane Lee (MD) 72 5 1
4* DB (/WR) Brandon Turnage (MS) 109 9 7
4* CB Christian Williams (AL) 79 9 5
3* K/P Will Reichard (AL) 1452 2 61

Nation's #2 kicker (also a very good punter) will commit on May 24. So, at halfway to Dec signing period, the class will be half full at 14 commits.
Taulia, Tyson, Bowles, Cheney and Dale will likely be rated higher after FB season. Kight and Alfano have potential to become 5-stars.

2019 Prospects (14) Rank: Nat Pos St
5* RB Trey Sanders (FL) 7 1 2
4* WR (/H/S) Devonta Lee (LA) 85 14 5
4* WR (/H/S) Milton Wright (KY) 147 13 3
4* WR Mycah Pittman (CA) 63 11 11
5* OC Clay Webb (AL) 12 1 1
5* OT Darnell Wright (WV) 3 1 1
5* DT (/DE) Ishmael Sopsher (LA) 4 1 1
5* DT (/DE) Faatui Tuitele (HI) 24 2 1
4* DE Nathan Pickering (MS) 48 4 2
5* OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux (CA) 1 1 1
5* ILB Nakobe Dean (MS) 27 1 1
4* ILB Christian Harris (LA) 143 12 8
5* S (/NB) Daxton Hill (OK) 14 1 1
4* S (/CB) Noa Pola-Gates (AZ) 285 19 5

Milton Wright: Big, fast, athletic, tough; excels at WR and safety; may have Flex-TE/HB potential.

Mycah Pittman is the real deal.

Pickering: Has potential to become a 5-star; a little raw, huge upside.

Pola-Gates: Might be significantly underrated; Bama likes him at CB.

tOSU hasn't slouched putting DBs in the league recently, they have had 5 1st Rd DBs in 3 years.

You lost me at Sheffield being a potential 1st or 2nd round Draft pick. He was a liability for them this past year. Pruitt got to campus, watched him for a month of practice, andtthought he was one of the most overrated, overhyped players he'd ever seen. He was right. He might have a nice senior season in Columbus, and he's still worth hope for them due to his raw physical ability, but he's a long way from being a 1st or 2nd rounder. And I don't think he'll have the height to be a Combine freak. 40 time will be lights out, though. Just not a very good CB, though.

I don’t think that’s what he was suggesting at all. Actually the opposite since he left Alabama.

Yeah. I noticed that he said "a slightly harder road". Not meant as a slam to Carlton. I just basically took that opportunity to slam Sheffield.

Yeah, I should have just said harder road. I was trying to find the right phrasing considering OSU's recent CB draft history as mentioned by Magilla. I think he is considered to be a 3rd to 5th rounder right now, but with a strong year he could climb into the first 2 rounds. You are right to say he had some serious issues with busted coverages at times this year and has a good bit of work to do for him to be an early round pick. Basically I was saying the chance of him being picked in the first 2 rounds would have been better had he spent all 4 years at Bama instead of transferring regardless of where he landed, but he still has the potential to get there, hence the "slightly" harder road.

Even the kickers smh
Had the inkling few weeks ago, but it's fun to watch.
Special class coming this year.
Tosh = Boom
Can't give him enough credit tbh. Not that it wasn't known what he could do.

It's just getting started lol. Fun stuff.
Some hints would basically answer, but it's gonna get fun.

Is this an actual realistic projection or just a best case scenario type thing? Because if this could actually happen, it would have to be far and away the best class anyone has ever signed.

Our chances are pretty good with all those guys. Not quite best case. Would be best class ever.

Good list Surge. There’s only a few changes I’d make. I don’t think we need 3 WR’s in this class and would prefer another DL or 2. I think Pittman goes to UF and we get Byron Young. If we can get Pickering as well than I would also consider replacing him with Wright. Lee and Turnage are both capable of playing WR and that’s one position we aren’t hurting at. I’m also not very confident in getting Sanders and Hill and would replace them with Ealy and McCollough

It is a good list but I dont think we get Kayvon thibodeaux. I dont think we get trey sanders like you said and I dont buy the silent commit for Sopsher. Ill believe it when I see it
